i just purchased my first schatt & morgan knife on ebay today. it looks like a good knife but, i don't really know too much about them. the one i got is a 3 blade whittler with the wharncliffe blade. i am totally stoked to find this knife with the blades it has and the size it is. one thing i did read before buying it was that it is made of 420 hc steel. this steel in particular is one i have had a hard time with sharpening as it seems to roll over alot. when i say my experience with it i mean mostly the only knives i sharpen that have this kind of steel is the newer buck knives. i wonder is the heat treat better with schatt & morgan or can i expect it to perform well? i'm not trying to knock buck so don't get me wrong because i like buck alot.:D

Schatt & Morgan (Queen) makes wonderful knives. As far as the heat treat goes, I don't think it is any better than Buck's. Buck has the 420HC thing pretty much mastered. That said, I don't think S&M's heat treat is much worse than Buck's. It seems about the same to me- pretty good. What you are getting with S&M, as opposed to Buck, is a much higher level of fit & finish. S&M's are usually very well made. To Case's standards, or maybe a little higher. I have heard that the latest models aren't brought up to the same crazy mirror-finish that Schatt usually does, but I don't own any of these, so I can't say if this is a bad thing or not.

If you see a model that interests you, I say go for it! S&M makes beautiful knives that per form reasonably well. I own several that I like a lot. If you're interested in higher grade steel, their file & wire series is made with ATS-34.

I am able to get my S&M knives sharper than Buck
And they seem to stay sharper longer

Way ahead of Case SS

S&M make some really lovely knives - I mean drooling lovely. But they will use nonsense steel on a lot of their models. These are ones intended as non-use collector pieces I guess. I do wish they'd just stick with ATS34 across the board, like on the File and Wires. I'd certainly own a lot more of them by now if they did :D :D

I've been browsing something of their knives for when I can save up and buy another slip joint, and I'm wondering: how is their quality control? how sharp are the blades out of the box? and how is their back spring strength?

I had a S&M and it came razor sharp outta the box but I got rid of it because it was a 100% nailbreaker! I don't like a weak spring but I do like my thumb nails to stay attached when I'm opening my knives. LOL :D

I have a S&M large trapper from their F&W series that use ATS-34, and can verify that this knife came super sharp out of box. It held its edge through skinning and deboning 3 deer and 2 mouflon sheep....the patterns 2 blade design did'nt hurt in this dept. either:D Like I actually had 2 knives:thumbup:

Well,I sent one out today, for repair. The spring popped & snapped,on a two spring large muskrat I had. Basically an un used knife.
I have sent more than one other for repair, these were hairline pin cracks in bone. One lockback I had once, had been re done by them at the factory & it was the tightest I'd seen.
So,they make nice knives & they stand behind the stuff. It does not take too long in the event you send one back.
I'd say they're good knives. Slipjoints are mechanical devices. A knife that the blade/s fold. You'll need to expect some variation

i personally don't care how sharp a knife is out of the box being that i am a professional sharpener. for collecting purposes i can understand that though. i just hope the 420 hc they used on the dogleg whittler i ordered holds an edge and doesn't roll over when sharpening it.

well i got it and it seems to be a pretty good knife. the 2 small blades on this knife have a very tiny little bit of play but, the main wharncliffe blade is really tight and has a snap like i have never seen and would easily cause you to need stitches if you got your fingers in its way when closing. the finish is so beautiful that i can hardly tell it is even real bone, and the keystone shield is classic and very nice to look at. i know there are plenty of people who would probably put this knife away and not use it but, i have decided to put it right into my edc rotation.

Please post pics when you can, I'd love to see it.
