Schatt & Morgan!

Nice ones you y'all have here! This whole thread is a Jim Dandy.

I like the color and very unique jigging of the bone on that Stockman, Elliot.

smiling-knife, your reverse gunstock is very nice too, but that Canadian (Navy?) knife is breathtaking. Is that the original sheath for the knife? I recon from the date it was intended for military use for the Great War.

Thank-you for the comments sunnyd. The sheath came with the knife when I bought it. It is a perfect fit and seems to be of similar age. At the moment, I have no way of confirming if it was original with the knife though. Perhaps someone can help me with that.

S&M's small Sunfish.

I have a suspicion that the older ones are superior to the current range...they are a very personal knife, which is good but I'm not keen on all that fussy blade etching etc.It all shouts collector rather than worker to me. Individual range of knives will appeal to many, I have just 2: The Premier No.7 English Jack & The Horticulturalist's Knife (why not call it Gardener?) basically the same knife body with different jigging and blade choices. Both look nice, have excellent jigging and impressive snap but both have less than impressive gaps and a lot of blade wobble.

I have a File and Wire 4 blade Congress. Great knife, can't seem to warm up to the pattern though. I almost had this one confiscated at the airport. Was apparently still in my briefcase, which I had previously brought to a knife show. Maybe was trying to sell this one, don't know. Anyways, made it through security, and the girl operating the X-ray machine pulls me aside and produces this knife. Thankfully she gives me the opportunity to box it up and send it through checked baggage. Had to go through security again though... sucked, but worth it. Still have the knife. Seems to be the 2004 issue based on the above pictured Sunfish. Same dark red jigged bone handle material.

edited to add: This is NOT a for sale post... Perhaps I am giving myself more time to warm up to the pattern. Hard time right now to swallow anything with any kind of government connotation! Congress. Yep.

I picked up an S&M Gunstock Model here in the Exchange. It's a File & Wire with ATS-34 Blade and Jigged Scales. I love the 1/8th thick Spine and Backspring. It's 3 1/2" closed ans 6 1/4" open. The Blade is a nail killer to open but thats fine. I have touched it up on a Solingen Steel and it is still Poppin Sharp... Just a great knife as far as I am concerned!

I would love to find a Thick blade Stockman and or the likes of the Wildcat Driller to join the Gunstock...

thats the one i have, fit and finish are top of the line, ats-34 is one of my favorite steels, they do make great knives.

My first Schatt & Morgan just arrived, it's a sowbelly, and it's a beauty. At first I was a bit disappointed, it seemed smaller than I thought it would be when I pulled it out of the box. Then after handling it for a bit- I pulled out the 2 blade Tidioute scout from my pocket. Well, I'll be hanged. They're dimensions are almost identical. Same height, length and thickness. The Scout is quite a bit heavier for some reason- I think because the blades are longer.

The Schatt & Morgan looks smaller than it actually is. It's weird. Overall, I'm very pleased. Fit and finish are in between Case and Great Eastern- much closer to Great Eastern, but not quite as good. Bone to bolster fit is perfect, the bone and blades are nicely done. The edges are all well ground, and shaving sharp. The main blade is perfectly centered, the coping and spey blades nest perfectly and do not touch. There is no blade wobble at all. The only things that aren't perfect are that the walk is spongy, the snap is so-so, and the exposed backs of the blades (at the hinges) are left too sharp. The tip of the main blade has a small imperfection in the edge grind that will be fixed the first time I sharpen it. Nothing a few minutes with oil, a diamond file and some 2000 grit sandpaper can't fix (which I usually do anyway). I think after a little bit of TLC, this baby will get some serious pocket time, because I really like the pattern, the feel and the look of the knife.

I think my expectations were a bit high- I have always heard that Schatt & Morgan has the best fit & finish in the industry. From what I have seen, this may no longer be the case. Don't get me wrong, they are very, very good. But Great Eastern is a bit better, for out of the box F&F. I will definitely be picking up some more S&Ms in the future, though!

I've got this carbon steel (1095) Schatt & Morgan (formerly clothed in celluloid) which was re-scaled in stag by Ken Erickson inbound from a friend that lives way north.

(PS: Ken doesn't do re-handle jobs. This was just done as a favor to Charlie by Ken in return for having had a few patterns loaned to him for examination and consideration.)

Elliott, Ken made a nice looking knife out'a that one. I always called a Jack with a punch blade a Teamster's Knife..
