I have two 3/4 hp grinders that I use specifically for buffing but was wondering if I'm wasting my time.

I have various wheels and compounds to get my piece up to mirror polish but am not sure what the best combination is.

What wheel/polish should I use for HC steel? What is the best for SS?

Do the compounds work like sandpaper grit... Go to black, then to brown, then Tripoli, then white? Or will White on a certain wheel be good enough if the blade is ground to a high grit using sandpaper?

Thanks,
Jason

p.s. I know, 3/4 grinder is fast and gets the steel hot... water, check
p.p.s. I know, buffing is dangerous, buff down with blade away wearing leather... check

I did a couple CPM154 mirror finish blades a while back, I used black, then white. I made sure to sand to 2000 first so I would not have to buff that much, getting too agggressive with the buffer can wash out crisp plunge lines. I used a sewn cotton with the black (light touch) and an unstitched flannel with the white.

I am sure there is another way, that is what I tried and it worked.

I go from the black on a stitched wheel to the green chromium on a stitched wheel , then the green again on a loose wheel which removes the cloud that is left , the white diamond compound will also do this but the green still cuts a little . This is on ATS-34 and I grind down to a 15 micron = to a 1500 grit .

I only use stiched wheels, they grab alot less, not sure there is a diffence if performance but I like what I get with added safety, I sand to 1000 or 1500 and jump to green, probably not a pure mirror but really shiny small scratches.
