School Me on the ASH-1 Variants

Hey guys and gals,

I've been been keeping an eye on the exchange, waiting to snag an ASH-1 and sheath.

However, I'm still new to this and am a little confused on the variants. This makes it hard for me to know which one I want to wait for!

I had one .32 ASH-1 long ago (miss it now) and just scored my first TGLB. But I'd like to snag a mid-width ASH-1. This is what I'm confused about. Can someone breakdown the variants and their blade widths for me? I don't really want another .32", and I don't really want the .187" (skinniest variant, I think?). I'm looking for something in the middle.

Does that just leave .22"? And are .22" ASH-1's rare or common?

Or is there a .25" ASH-1?

Any info is greatly appreciated! Once I figure out the different variants and what I want, I'll have a better idea of what to look for or post a WTB for.

:D

The ASH1 LE (Limited Edition) is your ticket at .22". Not sure if there ever was one at .25". Commonality of each type coming up for sale here? I have been following, and purchasing them for only about 18 months now, and I'm not sure any pattern exists.

In that time, however, I have scored three each of the Skinny, and the LE, and only two CG's, or Fatties. Sure others will weigh in here with their opinions - and with more knowledge than I have garnered on this much loved Busse. Good luck in your search...;-)

I am not a real expert but I ordered one less than a month ago from the custom shop (Lexi is great) a 0.22 ASH-1 and I got it Monday (pictures coming this weekend) and it believe they had blanks a couple of weeks ago. As to the knife as I say I do not have a lot of experience with Busse and I have not really used the knife but so far it feels great in hand and the blade is sooooo sharp (great job Garth). It is a very nice knife.

According to his recent post here, Andy is off bush hunting. But those three thickness are what you will encounter most often...;-)

I don't own an ASH, however made sheaths for 3 and just starting 4th.
The thicknesses I had worked with (or temporarily held custody of) were:

.176
.200
.220
.226
.320

Hmmm...some interesting thickness variations. That one at .200 was a Fat Skinny, or a Skinny LE. I have found interesting variations on other Bussekins that I have owned lo these many months. I do have one ASH1 that looks close (just by visual comparison), to that .200 you mention...;-)

I think that the .200 is one you used to own

Officially,

0.18
0.22 LE CG (coated) and Sabre Ground
0.32 flat and sabre ground.

There is some variations in measurement due to coatings I believe. My 0.22 coated (desert sand) runs at .226 the coating feels thicker but I can't be sure this is it.

There are also some 0.20 sabre ground blades about as well.

Given the manufacturing process I think some of the variations are certainly due to this. There are some .22 blades around that I think were ground down from 0.32 blanks so they may be different to a blade that came from a 0.22 blank. There is also more care in grinding a satin bound blank than a CG (coated).

I would LOVE. 0.25 ASH !! A 0.22 would be the last knife I owned alive and will be buried with a 0.32 (just in case !!!).

Off bush tomorrow morning (a .32 is packed).

I agree that both coating & blank thicknesses probably vary some. I have a coated skinny that measures .194", so starting with a theoretical .1875" (3/16") thick blank, a little thicker coating and/or blank would be right around .20". I measured 3 fatties - one DC finished one is .318", and two coated ones are .327" & .330" thick.

Thanks gk4ever2. Interesting variations you list. I need to get a micrometer one of these days...;-)

Eh BIG ASH is a little too..... Big.... Lol for my needs I think. Think I need a .22 ASH but I've been tempted by a few .32 ASH's that have shown up for sale lately.

If I could find the right .22 I'd be set, but it's always hit and miss in the exchange. I hate to pass up a nice .32 if the right .22 never presents itself, know what I mean?

Does it not have a different longer blade? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I am still new to this lol!

Anyone have any pictures? Maybe that is actually what I need. I don't know what I was thinking of.
