I have a schrade 885uh. It was given to me on 21st (I think ?) some 40 years ago. It has the number 80494 stamped on the inside of it. what is that number for ?.

Used for warranty replacement.

80494 would indicate to me the stamp on the tang of the main blade is SCHRADE/NY USA/885UH.

Correct?

Stamped on the tang of the main blade is schrade + usa 885um Can I tell from the number 80494 when it was made?. If so where would I look to find out?

Very hard to tell the exact age. I have two SCHRADE NY 885UH, one with serial #72824, and the other is #J0418. I would have thought yours, with a number of 80494 would had the same stamp as mine, as alledgedly the Schrade NY stamps were older than Schrade+ USA, but I also thought the the lower the serial number, the older the knife, within the same pattern.

Both of mine came in a brown box, and are in mint condition, I assume they are original to the box, but there is no proof. The COA and warranty replacement card in the #72824 has a Schrade Walden Cutlery logo on it, so I thought it came soon after the 1973 name change, but who the heck knows.

Maybe it is better to guess the decade. For yours, I'll guess 70's. I know it is at least after 1973. ;) With your knife, to date it by the year, would take production number information. Or you get the Codger involved. He seems to have the best knack at this type of riddle.
