I want cheap, small and carbon steel. I really don't know a whole lot about classic style slipjoints and am wondering what the concensus is on these type of knives.
I am certainly no slipjoint expert, but I have found a good Queen folder to be hard to beat if you are looking for a real traditional pocket knife. I carry a Gunstock with D2 steel, and the fit and finish is really amazing for the price. It is a good user also since it only cost $30.00. A great value. Take a look.
Schrade's OT series are excellent. Great carbon steel blades easy to sharpen and they hold a good edge. BUCK knives are stainless steel however you won't go to wrong with a BUCK. CASE makes some nice pocket knives tho their CV "carbon steel" offerings are limited. Check out their yellow handled and amber bone line. Most of the yellow handled ones have CV blades and some of the amber ones do as well.
If you want a nice smaller penknife in carbon steel, there are very limited choices since the few companies that make slipjoints have gone to mostly stainless steel.
That said, the Schrade that you found on ebay is one choice...although Schrade is now out of business...so now is the time to get one.
Buck makes a couple of small penknives...both in 420 stainless.
A really good bet would be a Case model #32087 Pen in CV steel....a great size and stlye to carry, and in carbon steel. (Case chrome vanadium = carbon steel)
Queen makes one style of small pen pattern in D2 steel and smooth red delrin handles.
RUN, don't walk to your nearest Walmart and get some of the last of the Old Timers they have left. If you want a really great knife at low cost you can't go wrong with Old Timer.
I have always thought the best bang for the buck is the Schrade Old Timer. All the others like Buck, Case, etc. are great names, but the OT's are a solid, inexpensive performer.
BTW, Camillus makes some pretty good SJ's, for the price.
There are great recommendations with Buck, Case, etc., I carry what I have carried for many of years the Ka-Bar. I just recently bought the Ka-Bar Mule and with a little work it will begin to loosen up. My Ka-Bar Warthog Folder opens as quick as one can open the blade with the thumb stud.
