I think most of us are aware that Schrade made knives not only for retailers with their branding, but for other manufacturers, and even acted as a jobber sourcing other manufacturer's knives to retailers, providing the displays. Among those manufacturers was Buck Knives. Here is a post I ran across in the Buck forum by Moderator Joe Houser, Director of Consumer relations Buck Knives Inc.

You are correct that it is a Schrade model 301 Stockman the grooved bolsters are that knive's trademark. They first came out in late 1967, followed by the model 303. We then asked Schrade if they would change the design so that we could make the repairs that would inevitably start to show up. The way they made the knives was really cool, you just could not repair them without replacing just about everything. They declined and we went on to Camillus, who made the rest of the 300 series for us.

And here is the knife posted by flylock being spoken of:

Keep your eyes open for these while perusing the Primbles and Craftsman knives!

Very interesting info there Codger, thanks for bringing that up. I would have never guessed that even some Buck knives were made by Schrade.

Yes, and Bokers too. I had known about the Schrade-Bucks for some time, but never seen the specifics of a pattern like I found in this post. Time to do some archive diving and see what else can be recovered on these!

Codger,

you never cease to amaze me.

This is fascinating information, especially for a relative newcomer to Schrades like me.

Somehow, I keep imagining in my head an enormous diagram, like a family tree of the US cutlery industry...with branches connecting Camillus, Schrade, and all the others... and now Buck and Boker as well !

This has become a very complicated history indeed.

And I am sure it will carry on being interesting. Thanks for all your posts.
