Schrade Cut Co question

I am new to this forum. I have a collection of knives that I have purchased over the years through onsite house auctions. One in particular is an early 20th century Schrade Cut Co Bone Handle Button Knife with U.S. PAT date of Dec 21, 09. When the button is pressed the blade opens to 90 degrees. My question is what is the blade supposed to open to? Is the blade supposed to open to 180 degrees or is it supposed to open to 90 degrees? Thanks to anyone who can answer this question.

Welcome,

I believe that it should open fully 180 degrees but the spring has probably lost strength over the years, you may want to ask at the Schrade Collectors Forum or wait and maybe a moderator will move the thread.

I have several of these old button knives. Often it only takes a little oil and careful working of the blades to get them firing properly. In fact, the small blades on the double buttons often fire hard enough to bounce back instead of locking open. (In other words, yes it should open the full 180 degrees)

Welcome to Bladeforums!

This knife only has only one blade with one button and a lock mechanism. The fact that this knife is from 1918 with an early PAT date of 1909, would it be possible that the blade maybe would only open to 90 degrees? Maybe later models opened to 180 degrees?

Ron, that may be a question for the Bernard Levine forum here in BF. Either Bernard or Bill De Shivs, who checks in once in awhile, should be able to answer for sure. Make sure you have photos, its protocol over there.

I have photos. Will someone ask me to email them or do I upload them? What is BF? And how to I get to the Bernard Levine forum?

I think I get it now. Does BF stand for Blade Forum?

It is not considered ethical around here to discuss a knife you currently have listed on ebay! You should remove the listing, or erase the posting! First-timers get absolved of their sins;-)

Didn't know that but in Bernard Levine's forum it says you can point to a picture on Ebay so that is what I did. See below:

3. Identification questions REQUIRE pictures, or hot links to pictures (for example, to an eBay auction).

If you read your previous post, it is NOT clear whether that is your listing or not! The implication is, they are your pictures!

Does early 20th century Schrade Walden NY pocket knife open to 90 degrees?

This is a question for Bernard Levine: I have an early 20th century Schrade Walden NY bone button fold pocket knife with three U.S. PAT dates, the latest being 1918 and would like to know if the blade is supposed to open to 90 degrees or 180 degrees when the button is pressed? The knife opens to 90 degrees and I would like to know if this is how it was made. I have posted pictures to Photobucket - see url below for images.

There are two hallmarks, one that says Schrade Cut Co Walden NY, the other says U.S. PATS Dec 21, 09; Sep 13, 10; June 6, 18. The knife measures 7 1/4” when opened and 4 1/4” when closed.

I would like to know if the blade opens this way (90 degrees) as opposed to 180 degrees when the button is pressed.

Since I can't get the image URL to work I am going to upload a picture of the knife in its open position. Or maybe I just fiqured out how this image URL thing works.

Sorry about this. Just am having difficulty uploading this image and inserting the image URL. I do not see the Manage Attachments button below the Reply window.

I see from the posting rules below that I do not have privileges to post attachments.

I hope someone can then help me with the answer to my question just by my description of the issue.

From the description, I think this is the knife in question.

If so, another photo shows it fully open.
