I kinda feel like I got in the way of a Herd while trying to close a gate- each and every one of them had a bit of fun wiping their Hooves on me :D, I always look at it like this, - In a few months I will be looking back at this stage

Back to the Knives- Hey Codger- good to see you here mate, just waiting to see if Cal takes the bait....

My deer knife for many years.Don't pay attention to the black on the edge. I use the black magic marker trick when I sharpen this knife. When it goes to the woods,it's sharp.

image.jpg image.jpg Looking for a date range on this Schrade Walden 165 Old Timer knife please

It has the “Schrade Walden 165” tang stamp on the left hand side of the blade
“Schrade Walden 165” 10508

A little history on this knife i found it in a little clearing in the Southern Colorado Mountains while we were hunting elk it was completely rusted over . I used some steel wool and was able to get most of the rust off but it’s still in rough shape and it won’t hold a edge at this point I will probably bring it or send it to someone to have it restored if you guys have any suggestions feel free to recommend. It looks like someone took a grinder to the blade at some point as well

Thank you
Jesse Lee

Not a fixed blade kind of guy, I appeal to you who know!! What's the story with this one??
It has a nice set of clothes!!:)
What's PH stand for?? I assume the + sign indicates Schrade's stainless!
The sheath must be of chrome-tanned leather as verdigris forms readily on the brass "guard"!!
Please assume ignorance on my folder-soaked part, and tell me anything you know, and by all means show us your Fixed-blade Schrades!!:D

Charlie, that's a fine looking knife.
There is a good write up on David Yellowhorse in the Oct. 2019 issue of Knife Magazine. There is a Schrade fixed blade hunter featured in that article, it looks to be the same model as yours but with a different inlay. There is also contact info at the end of the article ( page 46 ).

Your knife was made in early 1968. A good find! I see the dye on the Delrin handle has bleached out or been sanded off. The blade can be smoothed and polished somewhat. But there is noithing I see which woulkd change the properties of the steel such as to affect it's ability to take and hold a properly applied edge.

I used this pattern knife for many years as my primary knife in hunting whitetails. It is an excellent design. Get someone to put a proper edge on it and then keep it that way. The correct sheath can be found on eBay still for not much.

Here are a few of mine before they were stolen a few years back.

The Chinese 165s are ground different at the point. I'm still looking for an old one. Trouble being I want it cheap.
They are still out there. I have a few left but they are old, new in the box but not cheap. You might be well served to pay a bit more and get a new original one. Keep a running search on that Bay place. You just can't beat that good 1095HC steel!

Like Codger said ( and if anyone knows about these knives my friend - it IS Codger for sure ! ) - those are Great knives, if your photo is anything to go by I think all your Knife needs is the edge totally re profiling- I can see discrepancies in the edge just without blowing up your photo- so you will probably find the Knife was poorly sharpened before the last owner lost it.

Cool find, Horrible loss!

If thats the same steel used in my 171 then I heartily agree! Takes a screaming sharp edge, the one my friend has that has the birdshead pommel is the same, scary sharp. First time I saw a 171 my friend came over and picked me up in his Dads truck and his was laying on the seat. A relative had given it to him. That was back in '98 or '99 we was still in high school, and I thought "I gotta get one of these." Lol it only took me until last year .

Another Guns&Ammo knife! It isn't a coincidence that there are so many survivors still in use today. There were two production runs made as subscription bonuses. . First production (1976-1978) totaled 30,350 pieces. Second production (1982-1984) totaled 44,979 pieces for a two production total of 75,579 pieces. And here we have examples of each production still in use with little sign of damage or wear other than well earned patina!

That 141 with the figural bear head pommel is cool too. I bet Henry was surprised that sportsmen glommed onto it the way they did for a few years. It's name was "Tall Tale"! I personally think it was a jab at K-Bar and the "tall tale" they promoted for years about the woodsman who wrote them a letter about how he used one of their knives to "K a Bar"! Otherwise it was a play on the Baer name. Like how he named most of their lockback knives with bear names.

Here is my original Sharpfinger. Many good memories of use afield for over thirty years. Circa 1976-77.
