I am interested to know if the lock-up on the Schrade Golden Bear is as strong as that of the Buck 110. I have never had a chance to handle the Golden Bear, but I really like the derlin handle and the lanyard hole.
Overall the Buck is nicer with a better fit and finish. For pure durability and lock strength, either one should suit you just fine. The Schrade is not as pretty, but IMO just as strong.
I'd say the Schrade will be just as tough, but the Buck has much better steel. If you really want to upgrade, get a custom 110 with premium steel from Pete's Custom Shop.
I agree with the majority here so far - go with the BUCK! and mnblade stole my response about PCKS Visit Pete's and you will come away with the knife of YOUR choice - you decide handle scales, blade steel, blade configuration, engraving if you want, etc.
Don't forget Buck's reputation for Customer Service as well. Just another reason I only carry BUCK!!!
I have a couple of 110's and a Schrade. While the Schrade is certainly a serviceable knife, the Buck is nicer. I had to deburr the handle of the Schrade because the edges and corners were so sharp.
I have the Schrade Old Timer version of the 110 whatever it is called, and it is a great knife. The lock up is better than servicable and the carbon steel blade takes a great edge.
Matt
If you are really looking for something in that shape that is a little different, see if you can find one of the Buck 560's before they are all gone. Ti handles make for a light and strong knife.
