I thought I'd post some pictures of my Schrade Kious serial number 0007 out of 1000. I bought it when I worked at Schrade and they were nice enough to let me have one of the top ten serial numbers. Usually they were reserved by Wally Gardiner but I guess he Ok'd it. I figured I'd post it while I still have it.

Thanks for posting the Kious. How long did you work for Schrade, and what kind of work did you do?

I worked there from ~2002 to 2004 when they closed down. I was a Design Engineer, and designed the Spitfire, Cable Lock, and SQ587.

Thank you for posting those excellent pics of a great knife, Davis; I bet you have some stories we would like to hear.

Thanks,

I think it is my favorite design that came out of the Custom Knife Department at Schrade. When I worked there, I became pretty good freinds with Harold Buley who ran the depatment. He's a master and as good as any of the top custom knife makers out there. He was kind enough to teach me some of the art, and had Schrade not closed down, I'd be fairly competant knife maker by now.

Thanks for posting and welcome to our Schrade obsessed corner of the internet. Harold Buley is still at it. Check out this thread regarding another of his Schrade Custom Dept efforts: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/880428-NAHC-15th-Anniversary-%281993%29-Sambar-stag-LB9-type-guthook

Eric (ea42) was kind enough to provide this classic pic of Mr. Buley hard at work at CSC in 2011.

What a great knife! I've always liked how the two blades overlap each other. Do they come up for sale often?

DavisD1W : That is a gorgeous knife! Thanks for sharing the pictures & your recollections.

In 5 years of watching Schrade USA knives on Ebay, I've seen about 4 of them up for sale or auction. They are handled in either brown or green jigged bone. The green ones were a 001 to 100 issue, and have a propeller shield.

This one was owned by Joel Sandeno, Gradall5200 on the forum. Not sure if he still has it or not.

Good advertising for a knife you have For Sale on eBay.

Ken, you are doing the advertising, not the OP. You ought to learn how to post a quote correctly before you make an accusation.

Hey Davis, welcome!! I've been working with a bunch of guys from the custom dept. over at Canal Street. Kenny and Alex are two of 'em, don't want to mention last names but you probably know who they are. Wally and the Swinden clan are there too!

Nice Kious, been wanting one of them for quite a while, got a bunch of the fixtures, gauges and jigs but not the knife LOL!

Eric

HI Eric,
Glad to see you guys at Canal Street are doing well. I've bumped into Wally and Joe at SHOT and I think Outdoor Retailer. Your knives are top notch. Keep up the good work!

I recently won a Schrade-Kious knife, brown bone, no shield and NO serial numbers and no pouch/box/paper work. There were 1000 of these made. Did all 1000 have serial numbers ?
I will post pics when i have the knife likely in 2 days time.
thanks, kj

Knife looks right to me except no serial #.
Were serial numbers applied as they left the factory ? i.e. if all 1000 did not sell then left over ones would not have a serial #.

I do not know if DavisD1W will see this old post. However, Davis if you designed knives in 2002 to 2004.
Did you ever see a Schrade SQ111 Black Ice? I would like one for my Schrade collection.

Joe,

I don't think all 1000 serial numbers were used up before Schrade closed. That said, when they did close, it was very quick. We came to work one morning, and were told to come to a company meeting at 9:00AM in the cafeteria. At the meeting they said that their attempts to get a loan had failed and that the company was closed and we were out of a job. So we all got our stuff, said good bye to each other, and left. The leaving part was kind of chaotic and I'm pretty sure there were Kious knives built that were waiting for serial numbers. What happened to those knives when the company shut down is anyone's guess. If you bought it from some guy on ebay I'd say there was a possibility that it might be a second, but since you won it, I'd say it was a knife that just never got a number before the company shut down.
Hope this answers your question.
