Thanks Michael. Nice thread with a lot of info. Very nice research done in there. Needless to say, the steel is still a pretty competative item to bid for on Ebay.
They were made for quite a few years and many of them were never used so they appear frequently. Doing a completed auction search using my search parameters turns up 14 steels and sheaths in various states of condition and completeness. Prices seem to average around $35-40 with highs of $61 and lows of $20. I have all three main variants but tend to use diamond hones myself.
Hope some of this has been helpful. They do make for a more complete display of fixed blades since they were included in some of the "HK" hunting knife displays.
If you have the time and the patience, those little old hard Arkansas stones are all you need to put a good edge on a blade, plus a little stropping on the back of the sheath helps also.
Sharpening steels remove too much metal and do not really hone an edge well.
I really like the Spyderco Sharpmaker system.
For many years I used a medium India followed by a Hard Arkansas.
A leather strop(glue an old belt to apiece of wood) will give you a true razor edge.
