Hello I collect original Schrades and I just bought 2 new ones for my collection both USA made and both are 34OT models but one of them says Safety First instead of Old Timer, what was this for and how much is it worth the knife in in MINT condition.

I had not seen that shield, and I do not know the history of it, but I don't believe it increases the value, unless someone was a Schrade collector and interested in safety or different shields. On it's own, a new Schrade USA 34OT, with the original box is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 to 30 on Ebay, with auctions ending $5.00 to $10.00 either side of that, depending on the day, the age of the knife, and who is bidding. Original packaging makes a difference on Schrades.

In my opinion, the "Safety Shield" would detract from the value, if one was to sell it. Others might see that differently. Out of curiosity, is there a company name associated with shield? It appears there might be lettering above and below the "Safety First" but I can't tell for sure.

My guess is that some company gave safety incentives to it's employees for having a certain number of accident free hours.

Since Schrade was known for special order runs for companys I am assuming that they had "Safety First" put on the shield on their knives to give to employees when they cleared the number of safe hours needed to earn a prize.

That is just a WAG though. May not be worth more but the 34OT is one of the finest pocket knives around. Just right for slipping in your pocket and having a nice, easily sharpened tool with you.

Neat Old Timer.

Thawk:no theres no letters above the Safety First shield just a bunch of .......

LWT:Thanks bro

Well first one I saw like that. Should be a good one. Everyone likes that 34 pattern.

Thanks anyway I only payed 20.00 for it the man who sold it to me doesn't like Schrade lol also I have several Imperial knives are they Schrade as well

thawk has the pricing about as close as anyone can guess. but imho, the "different" sheild makes that one stand out in the rather LARGE crowd of the 34ot's. it was a very very popular model and to have one that is "different" is really neat. i have seen alot of then in the past 6 years and i dont recall seeing that sheild before. i think most collectors look for variations that are out of the norm. uniqueness has a value.----------brady

Beta, welcome to our little club here. we 'meet' any time, day or night, just make a post and soon some of the other great guys here will post back with info and often pics of their related knives.
i started collecting Schrades just over 3 years ago and have about 300(?) now and there's more that i don't have than do have. Schrade made an almost unending variety of knives. the Schrade-Walden knives along with Schrade Cutlery Co. and Ulster are all part of the family and most of these older ones are super well made knives. try and get a couple and you'll see what i mean.
thanks for showing the "Safety First" shield. first i've seen of it.

Thanks you all for such a warm welcome guys I really do appreciate it

Beta - I really like that "Safety First" 34OT. I just started collecting Schrade a couple of weeks ago after I pulled out an old 34OT carried by my father and given to me by him before he died in 1993, so I'm partial to the 34OT. I feel like one can not have too many 34OT's!

I can't disagree 34OT was one of the most popular knives by Schrade awesome knives if you want a Safety First 34OT I can most likely get ya one from the guy at my local antique shop I just found out that the guy who owns it is no other than Chance Priest anyway thanks for the comment I just started collecting myself
