Schrade SCHF1 Hollow Handled Awesomeness?

Funny story, a buddy of mine posted his Project II for sale last night on FB. I wasn't interested since I know it failed horribly in the destruction test, so I wasn't really interested in the knife especially at his asking price of $425. I've always been interested in the single piece construction, but the price just kept me from seeking them out. I just so happens to swing by my local Academy's to take a peek at their knives since I had some time to kill. I stumbled upon the smaller version of this and I saw the price tag of $64.99. My initial thought was that it's a nice poorman's alternative. It was a tempting offer, but I wasn't sure of the persformance of this "new" Schrade. So according to your findings, it's a worthwhile purchase. Now I see that there's a bigger version and on Amazon for much less, it's even more of a temptation. Do you have a follow up review?

My last follow up a few days ago was the latest. If I'm honest, I don't have much use for big fixed blades. From the perspective of fun and novelty, with a dash of very high performance/cost ratio, the knife is, imo, absolutely worth the asking price.

Just a side note after looking at the pics I posted... I'm not sure if I mentioned it already but the blade has a patina, not corrosion or wear. The paint they use to coat the knife is crap. If I can figure out a decent way I'll be removing the paint from the handle too. I think it would emphasize the one piece look.

Btw, did you watch the destruction video with this knife from the same guy? It did pretty well.

I say grab one. If you don't like it I bet you could trade it for something else. :)

Considering that I hear nothing but good things about it, I went ahead and bought one a few hours ago. This new Schrade seems to be pumping out some good stuff. It's nice to see these take over companies are actually trying to release good products.

I didn't watch the destruction vid because I can't find it anymore. Not even the other destruction tests.

Thanks brother. I just saw your review. It was very well done (much better than mine!) and it's a shame that it degenerated into a locked thread. What a bummer considering all of the work you went to. Oh well, that's water long ago under the bridge I suppose. :)

There has been some question as to the steel used in the knife over the years. Just to clarify in case someone only sees this thread, I believe without doubt that the steel used is 1070. It's been confirmed by Taylor and I put some mustard on the exposed blade last night for about 10 minutes and got a heavy patina as well as a bit of surface rust.

I'm very much looking forward to taking this with me on my camping trips this summer. I'm planning on using it for everything and I won't go easy on it.

Eh, no worries, some people are just passionate about their opinions. As a general rule I find that preferable to apathy anyway. Yes water long under the bridge, but the knowledge gained from posting that thread was priceless, so no complaints.

You know, I went looking for those videos the other day and couldn't find them either. I think that guy (noss? Something like that) stopped doing videos because of pressure from the industry, but I could be wrong. If that was the case, I wonder if he also removed the videos on YouTube.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the thing. You'll likely want to reprofile the edge in order to maximize potential. If you have an Edge Pro that'll work, but as I mentioned, my best results came from the belt grinder.

I hear ya, although I may prefer apathy! :)

I actually really enjoyed those videos. It's nice to see the limits those knives can be pushed to. Honestly,it seems that the people who don't like those videos are just butt hurt from seeing their favorite maker being outperformed by supposed "lesser" knives and makers.

I learned more about things here, and how many people think, in that one post than I could have learned from years of asking questions. I am friends with many of the participants in that thread to this day.

I'm sure there is some of that. Some are bothered by the theft of the design, and others by knives being judged under, and denigrated due to, testing of knives under what many would deem unreasonable conditions.

No problem with that. After having been here for this long I'd be lying if I said that my experiences didn't peak my interest in a human behavior class. I actually think that forum culture would make for a fascinating thesis.

As for ip theft, there have been grumblings all along that Taylor made the knife, not with permission, per se, but with machinery that they bought directly from CRK. How likely that is I do not know.

I asked CRK about it and they replied that they never gave Taylor the go-ahead to make them. That still leaves a bit of wiggle room for legitimacy. I don't really want to get into the politics. As long as the thing is not represented as a knife made by CRK then I'm fine with it.

Hairlesstwinkie, I too enjoyed the videos. I watched them with a sense of humor. The action was clearly over the top and I would never think it conclusive. Now that I've said that, the Schrade took a lot more of a beating before it broke. :p

If CRK sells the equipment to Taylor then they can do whatever they want right? If it's really that big of a deal, wouldn't CRK be suing Taylor? Unless legal action has already been taken place.

Some of the conditions are truly unreasonable, but hey doesn't it help you sleep at night knowing that your bug out knife can take punishment for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Anything can happen when you go camping, hiking, backpacking or whatever in the world. 99.999% of the time a cutting edge would be all that's necessary, but that 0.001% of the time, something that can take the extra punishment without failing could be handy or save lives. We just don't know.

What I don't understand is why Noss wouldn't just leave the videos up. They're nice data points, a little extreme in terms of data points, but still data points.

Yeah, I don't know. There are a lot of gray areas when it comes to clones and the like. Especially when you can't get answers on key questions that would help clear things up.

I have a very specific personal view on these types of things but I don't typically discuss the matter openly. ;)

It appears that only few of us will even participate in this thread. So do share at some point if you don't mind. I should be getting mine in on Wednesday. I'm quite excited. It's nice to buy a knife that I just won't be afraid to beat up on.

I love the SCHF1. I have the one Noss destroyed in the video. These things are so tough I welded it back together and use it to this very day! Tough blades.

I have a Schrade SCHF-2, which is the same basic knife but with a bowie style blade. The ONLY thing that I really do not like about it are the serrations on the blade. To put it bluntly, I hate serrations on an outdoor knife! I truly wish they'd make these knives without the those darn things. All they do is get into the way!

A significant improvement you can make to the knife is to wrap the handle with Wilson Tennis Racket Handle Wrap. It's padded, and it really helps with both enhancing the grip and absorbing shock!

As for these knives being a copy of the Chris Reeves version, the reality is that they are not in competition. 99 times out of 100 the guy looking for a $70 Schrade simply is not going to buy, or is not going to be able to buy, a several hundred dollar custom knife, and they guy looking for a Chris Reeve custom for his collection is probably not going to go for the cheaper production knife instead. It's also likely that Taylor bought the right from CRK, or at least waited for the patents to run out! :D

Not a big fan of hollow knives… at all. In fact, i tend to avoid them like the plague. However, This Chris Reeve knockoff seems to have some merit. I like how it is basically just a solid hunk of 1070 steel. However, I've hear that it can't chop very well. I like a knife that can do a little bit of everything, so I would go with this one myself. However, if it works well, more power to you.

I just picked up what i'm told is a shadow one ! can anyone here I.D it pls ?
Awesome review! Its far from a original Chris Reeve, but for the price u get instant coolness.. I own 5 Chris Reeve fixed blades and 1 of these.
