I just bought a Schrade SCHF42 and its edge is uneven side to side. One side has a 2.5mm edge bevel, the other side has a 1.5mm edge bevel. The edge bevel is even from the base of the blade to the tip on each side.

How big a problem is this? Does an edge this uneven affect blade performance in any significant way? Should I try to grind the 1.5mm side to 2.5mm with my sharpening stones or return the knife to Schrade for a replacement? I have a 250/1000 combo Japanese waterstone, a mini DMT coarse/fine/extra fine diamond set, various "medium" and "fine" stones and Arkansas stones, and several sheets of wet or dry sandpaper and emery cloth. I have maybe average stone sharpening abilities. Thanks for any replies.

It's not a high dollar item, and they are very much mass produced. The amount of time a single person spends on that knife is at best a good couple minutes. Sharpen it up, and use it, don't look for perfection in that sort of knife, it is what it is. If you are unhappy with it, send it back. But that process might end up costing you more than what you have already invested in it. If it was say a $100 knife, that would be a different story.

I own the schf 36, 37, 38, schf 9 and pretty much all of them come needing fixed somehow on the edges, didn't bother me because they are what they are for the money, I just fixed them the best I could and now just enjoy using them without worrying about jacking up a expensive knife. They are well worth 5he money I must say though, 1/4" of 1095 steel, semi crappie sheath, fire steel, decent sharpener for touching up with for around 30-40 bucks.

If your 42 is like my 14 then it's probably due to the angles being off side to side. One side of mine was close to 20° the other 25° which made the edge wider on one side. Hold it up to a light and Look down the edge from the handle and you'll probably see it leaning slightly to wider edge. If so just sharpen it to your desired angle until the edge is centered.
