Anyone have an idea how to repair a cracked and loose wooden handle on my beautiful schrade-walden 147 fixed blade knife? I guess the dry climate here did it in. Should I try to repair or replace it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance you could post a pic?

Anyway, (without seeing it) usually a good 2-part clear epoxy or even super glue might work decently.

Yes, please post a picture.
We can tell a lot more from a picture.

Depending on the pattern, you may be able to fix it yourself. If not there several people around who repair them, myself included. However, at the moment I am backed you until Spring before I could take on any more work. We may be able to suggest a way for you to fix it yourself, or someone else who can get to it much faster than I can.

Good luck,
Dale

Thanks. I would post a picture but I'm not sure how. And, the crack is so thin I don't thing a picture would pick it up. There is no way to get any glue inside the knife handle to stop the wiggle in the handle and mend the crack. But if there is a way, I know you know how.

Never had a 147 before. How does the pommel attach? Is it by a screw head (this would be good), or by a smoothed pin (not so good)? If it were leather you could try swelling it, but wood (wonda wood?) is another story. You don't get much swelling or shrinking parallel to the grain. How did it crack, from the pommel to the guard?

Pommel is attached with a smoothed pin(not so good). I tried boiled linseed oil and that helped some but not enough. The hairline crack does run from the guard to the pommel with the grain. It is a nice knife or was. Not worth much as is.
