Schrade Walden 15OT value?

First off I would like to apologize if this question is annoying. I know these types of questions come up often.
My father asked me to sell this knife for him, but I'm not familiar with schrades. From Codger's great posts on the topic I gather it is a Deerslayer manufactured between 1971 and 1973. The blade markings are stamped. "SCHRADE WALDEN NY U.S.A" on one side, "15OT PAT. PEND" on the other. No sign of a serial number or any blade etchings.
Looking around on auction sites and google gives me numbers all over the place. I'm looking to find a reasonable value for selling or trading it here to someone who will appreciate it.
Thanks for any help.
-Steve

Due to condition, I'd guess $20 - $40. Maybe a bit more if the stars aligned properly.

It'd be worth $100 - $200 if it were unused and still in the original box.

Pretty spot on Bob. It is a good user, with no real special value for era of production other than that it is a U.S. made 15OT, not one of the recently imported ones. It appears that both knife and sheath could stand a bit of light cleaning. And by that I don't mean "restoration" or buffing, just lightly rub the dirt and funk off with mineral oil, and wipe down the sheath with a clean damp cloth. That might increase the eye appeal and tempt a buyer to give a few dollars more.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. Looks like I might end up being the new owner. :)
Codger thanks much for your prior research. It made dating this knife a piece of cake!

As a keepsake from your father, it's Priceless. Buy your dad a new knife so you can have his old 'junker'.

If my father had used it at all I wouldn't consider selling. He inherited it from an uncle he barely new (and I never met), and then it just sat in his basement for 15 years. Still a nice old knife with a history of its own though. Would it be knife blasphemy if I cleaned the rust off the tang with steel wool?

Steve, it is your knife to do with as you wish. Being used already and it's destiny to continue being a user, it's collector value is way down there, so you won't hurt it's value by using steel wool or even very fine sandpaper to remove rust. Enjoy your "new" knife as you see fit!

Would it be knife blasphemy if I cleaned the rust off the tang with steel wool?

I wouldn't rub it with anything abrasive, and it doesn't look that rusty anyway, just a few specks. Once you lose the patina (evidence of age) the knife loses it's character and it's "value." I'd just wipe it off with some oil and a soft rag. If you end up using the knife, the rust will disappear on it's own.

Best luck, whatever you decide.

do we know who the designer of the knife was? I had one myself (from the mid 70's to its fateful end in the late 80's) and have just recently ordered another one (found one on amazon.com). I recently discovered my dad's knife was designed by Loveless for Browning and am just wondering if anyone knows the designer at Schrade that did the 150T (also called deerslayer).

Yes, it was designed and patented by Henry Baer of "Uncle Henry" fame.

I might mention that if you have ordered a new one from Amazon.com, the odds are that you just bought a stainless Chinese copy made for Taylor Brands LLC.

Thanks for the tips.
I'm thinking I'll clean it lightly, oil it up, and hang on to it for my son.

wow! the name of the designer on the patent drawing! cool! (how did you find that ?? my patent searches turn up other Baer designs but not that one!)
as an industrial designer myself, I enjoy knowing the names of designers of the products we live with. the amazon knife I ordered is late on delivery... i think the canadian border collies are holding it up.. probably to charge me some sort of import tax. boy, i paid 15 $ for delivery, probably another 10$ on import taxes for this 25$ chinese copy! ha! the things we do for our collections , rational thought only to the collector! please provide me the link for the patent so that I may print it out and put it in the display box the chinese copy will get.. if ever it gets here!

Yeah, it is a design patent, not a utility patent. You can find a list of Schrade and affiliates trademarks and patents on the collectors-of-schrades-r.us site about halfway down on the main page. You can then bring up the original trademark or patent on the USPTO site, link also given there.
