I have my fathers riggers knife that he used for 22 years while he was in the Navy. The main blade is worn down to the point that when it is closed, the tip of the edge is actually above the channel. If I get a different knife from ebay etc, can a bladeSmith replace the blade without damaging the knife?

Post a picture of the knife, open. There is a very simple fix, unless the blade is completely worn out.

I hope these are clear enough. My camera sucks.

The blade is very worn.
Try this:
See the little pointed part of the blade tang? File it down, one file stroke at a time. It will allow the blade to seat deeper. If you take off too much, the blade will seat so deeply that you can no longer acess the nail nick.

Just a small flat file. Take a little bit off, and close the knife. The blade will sit a little deeper. Remove more as necessary, but keep checking, as it's easy to take too much off.

Bill....I'm going to try that fix, but in the event I'm not happy with it, do you think the blade can be replaced without damaging the knife?

I love old marlin spike folders.
The blade can be exchanged from a good knife, or a new blade made. The repair is not that difficult.
