Scientific Experiment, Desert Rat vs BK9

there was a sword thread that had a photoshoped swamp rat on it that looked like an american kensei blade (from busse) that had a battle rat handle on it. i would love to have one of those (& would be willing to go on a prepay waiting list if one ever starts), for me, it would be the ultimate machete.
it doesn't FEEL photo shopped. more custom shopped!

But, let's get to the real meat of the question:

Which is better, camo nylon sheath or black nylon sheath?

That's the bottom line determining factor.
Steel & handles are just fluff.

If I were to( and I have not) test the two side by side, I believe the Camp Tramp would out perform the Becker BK9( a larger knife) hands down. But then one is a combat bowie and the other a utility/ camp, chopper.

I don't think the tramp could outperform the bk9. Maybe in stain resistance, maybe. I certainly don't believe bk9 would loose in the chopping/slicing category. The handles on beckers are very good, you can make em rougher if you like or thin em out. Plus you can store some goodies under the handles, i don't think you can do that with Rats. Plus the Swiss stuff is much, much tougher than Resiprene C. I guess it's all up to personal preference, isn't it? Don't get me wrong, I like Swamp Rat knives and I own plenty of em and Beckers as well. As for the price point, if Becker offered Lifetime warranty, their knives would cost three times more and frankly, our men in the uniform wouldn't afford it.

Guys, I used to have a CT and BK-9 and have tested them side by side. The BK-9 out chopped and out sliced the CT. The slicing tests were performed in my kitchen against Potatoes, carrots, onions and other veggies, along with a few card board boxes. The Chopping tests were done at my mom's house against some 10" wide 1" thick fencing slats. The BK-9 bit deeper into the wood with less effort.

The CT held it's edge a little longer then the BK-9. Both are strong knives, but the CT seemed to be a little stronger. IMO do to it being a little thicker and differentially hardened. When it comes to balance the BK-9 flows nicely where as the CT feels chunky in the hand. Almost like the CT is missing a few inches of blade off the tip - It feels like it should be longer.

Both are good knives that will surve anyone well. I desided that the BK-9 worked better for me, so I kept it and traded the CT to a friend.

BTW Camillus has a Limited Lifetime Warenty on all of it's knives. The warenty does not cover abuse or neglect on the part of the user like the Swamp Rat warenty does, but it's still a good warenty.

Hope that helps,

Heber

After reading the previous posts on becker over ct, I spent some time with both knives. I guess it really does come down to personal preference and how a knife feels in your hand. I plan to spend some time on the handle of my bk9 and see if I can improve the feel of the knife in my hand. Have the same problem with my becker brute, I have a medium/ large hand and I think the handle on both beckers are a bit large for my hands. I like both products, but probably favor the ct because it feels secure in my hand, also like the weight forward feel of the ct.

Totally agree on the affordability of the bk9.

A thought on paying 2 or 3 times the price for a product that has an unconditional gaurantee. Is it a great gaurantee or are you just getting what you already paid for? Hmmmmmmmmmm. : ;)
