Scientists Invent A New Steel As Strong As Titanium

Obviously 440C gets a bad wrap because of bad ht and because of the steels more mysteriously id'd cousins of a similar nomenclature

When 440A and 440B and who knows what else was labeld as 440C is when it took a big hit in reputation.

The heat treat is better then before due to cryo but back in the day it was still good.

Common blade steels are already much stronger than titanium (tensile and compression yield) and have higher strength to weight ratios too.

Well, kinda. Strength to weight ratios are only superior with blade steels at high hardnesses. For structural applications and at spring hardnesses, 6/4 Ti has a higher ratio of tensile strength to density compared to tool steel.

The problem is that you can't practically make steels thin enough to take advantage of their maximum strength to weight - what is called the "beer can problem". A structural piece of steel thin enough to be as light as Ti would collapse under a small impact or scratch.

Titanium is a soft blade material. Steel is a heavy structural metal. Despite the cost, airplanes are going to keep using titanium hydraulic tubing because there is no steel that can be made as light for the necessary tensile strength and workable wall thickness.

I'm still waiting for zero gravity cast foam steel.

Exactly. Look at Lightning Strike cf. It has no use over the more typically produced product and can, reportedly, have the metal fibers exposed. The stuff has a legitimate design, but not so much for handle material. Even so, consumers want it because it's different. Nothing wrong with that.
LOL. Tell me about it. A couple of years ago, I managed to sell around 2000 Euros worth of 1/8 inch LSCF sheet at a show in Europe which, at the time was like $2700!!!!I sold it for the same or less than the prices that knife making suppliers were getting for it at the time in the US before adding in shipping and even with having to pay an additional $100 for an extra overweight checked bag, I doubled my money. Then everyone eventually figured out where I had gotten it and that they could order direct too if they were willing to pony up a minimum order of like $400 or so plus cutting charges. ;)

Man, and I just bought up all of Orren Boyle's preferred stock of Associated Steel! Dang competition, making it hard for the little guys. But, we can't be blamed. Oh no, no one can blame us.

If you get that, big thumbs up. If not, look it up.

how long till Atlas shrugs??;)

Foam steel ? well there is already foam aluminum !! It's used in at least one automobile bumper for it's light weight and impact absorbing properties .I don't know which car though .

Another old idea is compressed powder metals .You can adjust the densityfor filters, prelubricated bushings etc. No shortage of ideas from metallurgists !!!
