I picked up a zeiss conquest 3-9X40. I was in a rush to get it mounted and get to the range last week. In researching after the fact, I mounted it okay, but I should have done more sighting in before going to the internal adjustments. That being said, it was still hitting only 8 inches left and 3 inches high at 100 yards. I went straight to the internal adjustments and after a few rounds of shooting had it close to bullseye. I was pressed for time, however, so had to cut it short.
Next time I get to the range, I am going to put the internal adjustments back to zero and use the external windage screw adjustments to bring it from left to right before going to the internal adjustments. I guess I'm not sure how far from bullseye you have to be before you should use the windage screws as opposed to internal adjustments.
Anyway, the scope seemed very nice. I immediately saw that at the range, it would be nice to have more magnification. I can tell from only about 20 rounds so far that I am able to shoot very accurately with the rifle and I'm sure in the future I will be trying to stretch my long range abilities. That being said, I probably have plenty of magnification for actual hunting, and when I am going up and down canyons in the field, I'm sure that I will be glad I am not lugging some 20 power 56mm piece of glass.
By the way, the trigger on the Savage is great. I have never used a gradual trigger like that. Takes all day to pull the thing, but it seems so easy to fire with zero jerk.
