I own several AR15's. I have scopes on some, red dots on others. I really don't understand what you're asking. The word gear leads me to believe you might be talking about bullet drop compensators. If so, there are several scopes that come with BDC. From cheap Leapers, to original Colts, Leupolds, and others.
Post something more specific, and I'm sure you'll get some responses.
Usually the military shoots the ARs without optics, using only the iron sights. I think the ones you might have seen in Afghanistan on the MEUs and such are along the lines of the Trijicon Reflex or ACOG... I can't remember but that might be a good place to start.
Might want to check out ar15.com as well. There are many, many optics available from red dots that do not provide magnification (but excel in quick target acquisition) to Leupolds that are great for looong range shots. It all depends what he wants to do with the rifle. Cheers.
I think most if not all Canadian C7's(US M16) are issued with optics. I haven't seen a Canadian C7 yet that didn't have some sort of optics attached.. Actually nice little scopes.
I do hope they train our boys in the use of the C7 Without optics though. Something happens to the scope, they better know how to use the iron sights...
Somehow I Really doubt it....
Aaron... interesting that you would be looking at that scope for a muzzleloader. In general, those type scopes are grrreat for getting rapid, multiple hits because you can acquire the target much faster.
I spoke with a bud that works at a gunshop a long time ago and while he absolutely agreed that a magnified scope (say 2X and above) is a clear case of you-get-what-you-pay-for, he said that the function of the red dot scopes are all pretty much similar. That is, you really don't get the benefit of a super laser or really high quality glass. Now the ACOG is a totally different animal than your normal red dot scope for reasons that would get us off topic. Of course if you mistreat the glass then the better made scopes might hold up longer...
What I'm saying is that a generic red dot scope would probably serve your dad JUST FINE without needing to spend the hundreds of dollars on a piece of equipment like the ACOG. But even then... with a muzzle loader I wouldn't have any optics on it except for medical reasons (nearsighted, etc).
