So I basically constantly browse a few different auction sites other than the ebay when I've got time and I've found a few good deals... to be honest mostly fishing gear (a great pair of waders once) but occasionally the odd cold steel or schrade knife, motorcycle parts, that kinda stuff. So 5 days ago I was looking at a NY govt/police/DEC auction site and I see, what I'am almost absolutely sure is a Winkler Knives hunter's axe with sheath, a $500+ deal sitting described only as "hatchet" at $10!... I smelled blood in the water!! I mean this is not a well known auction site but it is a public internet auction site, so I didn't get my hopes up. But I watched it(positive one of you guys or somebody else who knows what it was was watching it too) Man I bet I checked that auction 4-5 times a day, put in my bid 5min before closing and won................... $13 and $11.95s&h for a Winkler!!!!! When it gets here I'll post pics to prove, I feel like a kid at christmas waiting for this thing to arrive. I question if it's real but at $25 it is a risk i'm willing to take.

If it is, you need to go buy a lottery ticket too---cause it's your lucky day !!! GREAT score if it is genuine.

Just out of interest has anyone heard of Winklers' knives being forged? I mean if this is a forgery/ fake it's good! The curvatures of the cuts are right, the number and spacing of the pin holes are on the money, curly maple scales, it's full tang and has a nice distal taper at the pommel, the sheath looks just like those on winkler"s website...If it is a fake, they really put in the effort to make it look real. I'm 95% sure this is legitimate I just can't believe it till it is in hand.

Good score! I can't imagine anyone faking a Winkler Knives 2 axe or hawk. The amount of effort it would take to copy the full tapered tang would just be too much.
It looks like the real thing to me, certain details look spot on. Look at the top when you get it, it should have "Winkler Knives II" stamped into the steel.

No, that looks terrible. I would be happy to refund your money and you can send it to me ;)

I run a fake winkler disposal operation, just send it along and I'll take care of it (NICE SCORE!)

I'm very jealous of your score. If you want to get rid of that axe, I'd be happy to add to your profit margin. Anyway, I'd really like to hear the story telling how this thing ended up on such an auction site. I realize you don't know, but... shrug. Curious.

I wondered the same thing. That particular site does a lot of lost property, evidence and confiscated merchandise in their auctions. I got a schrade sharpfinger off the same site that was evidence taped into its sheath, when I removed it from the sheath the blade was covered in dried blood... I called the auction site, they said much of the outdoor/camping equip, knives and hunting gear they have is confiscated from poachers or criminals by various law enforcement, DEC or fish and game agencies and that it was most likely animal blood. They offered to take it back and refund my $ but I kept it and washed it off, kinda a cool story. I would think this Winkler was confiscated by a ranger or maybe lost by someone and found by someone else who turned it in to the authorities/ lost and found and after awhile sitting there it got listed for sale... No way of knowing. But I'm curious as well about the how it came to be listed unrecognized on an auction site, I bet it is a good story.

Hey Joe,
Did you get it yet? Any updates on it's authenticity or condition, any pics?
