i found a burl--the biggest ive ever seen-- at a friends home. he has over 80 acres and is clearing a path for a vehicle... it took me awhile but i haphazardly cut about 1/5 of the burl. i was having trouble with my chainsaw. Anyway this was a score. thanks for looking

You better get it waxed up or it is gonna start to crack. It needs to dry slooow. Give it a year or more to dry.

Neat looking piece. What kind of wood it is?

well -i just cut these today--ill wax em tommorow. I wont be able to get back to the rest of the burl for a week!!!--i hope it will be ok laying out in the woods and not start cracking---i think itll be fine.. everything is still soaked around here. The burl is actually ho.roswod.burl. yrp we got some here in GA. our little secret.---do you think the burl will be ok out there for a week?--thanks marekz

I have no idea. It will crack some, but probably not a lot.

I hate to see a fellow human being suffering with not knowing what to do with something. Let me help you out of your dilemma. I know what you can do with it...let me get it out of your hair!

if you could get it home, you could boil it.
yes
boil it while it is still green
works perfect.

it must not dry out or all is lost.
put it in a kettle or pot or whatever will hold the [pieces
boil slowly for at least an hour.
buzz

i cant boil up pieces that are BIG. what i do is tommorow evening i will whipe it down then brush on a coating of anchorseal. i will leave it in my base ment for a very long time, however, i may cut some pieces into blocks when my bandsaw gets going. Then ill repeat above step except in wont take as long ( lets say) for a 4 x7 x7 piece of CHERRY BURL to dry than a piece that is 15 x 13 x 7. BTW what does boiling do--i know i have boiled all my finds in the past that could fit, but i did it to kill any insects!!!--marekz

Sorry Marek but your claim of Honduras rosewood burl is just silly. No way, no how!!! Looks like typical cherry burl full of voids and bark pockets.

;)Larry;) my winks are all over the place!!look at my other post down lower---i said cherry burl. good golly mrs molly--thanks--marekz

Thank you Galadduin. Maybe ive should have posted this in the humor section. I know the burl got voids and cracks-thats not the point. when i said hond rosewood burl - i was just kidding around since thats what i was thinking about--notice the winks. I just wanted to share some pictures of ( what i feel is beautiful) cherry burl. The thing is , i wish i knew what i was doing. I would love for someone to teach how to cut a huge burl. ( huge to me that is) These pictures show the cuts i made off a burl that must weigh over 400-500lbs. I couldnt even move it with a leverage bar. So now i must really look at the reainder in the woods to see how best to cut it. Its just alot of fun and work. The tree was cut down because of my friend building a road--meaning i didnt just walk into the forest and cut down a tree just for the burl. Im sure when it dries up ( a long time from now) i should be able to find 1 or 2 nice knife blanks in there-lol. Or someone might want to make a bowl or little table. anyway NO YALL its not hond rosewood burl--its just plain ol cherry burl--thank you--marekz

Marek, I know from the PMs and emails you've sent me you really want to be a wood seller and I applaud your passion for that. My invitation to pop over to my place and take a look at some high quality burls and woods cut for the high end knife and guitar industries still stands :)

Larry, me being a "wood Seller"!!! Yes i do talk with many sellers all over the country. Yes i ask everything i can about rare wood, common wood, cost, availability etc. Yes i do like to invest ( what little i can ) in wood. I myself have not any delusions about becoming anything near a Wood seller. I might sell a piece here or there but thats is really nothing. My main reason for inquiring about wood is for my son. He is 3 years old now and maybe by the time he turns 25, i can give him something that he can use. Between a full time job,a wife, a child, lots of yard work, caring for an elderly person and a knife hobby- i dont have the time or capital to become anyone of significance in the world of wood. I know how it feels to be left with nothing and paying for a funeral to boot. I dont appreciate you sharing parts of a private message in a public forum. Other members may intepret it in a negative way. I am just a father who is trying to learn as much as i can about knives and things that surround knives to pass it along. So when i inquire/ or ask you questions its not create some wood dynasty. im just learning. I find your post to be a bit sarcastic as was your previous one. I also wonder why you would even post it. You could have easily pmed me. but you chose to express a subjective part of a private message i sent to you. You applaud me --from your postings and your pm,s it feels like you are being passive aggressive and sarcastic and qiut frankly belittling me. Look through all my threads and posts- ive treated everyone here with kindness and respect. Dont think that you can veil your resentment ( or whatever you feel towards me)with words of encouragement. Thank you for all your prior correspondents. I am absolutely no threat to you at all, i am also not here for your disrespect either. im sorry that my happy find of a cherry burl is so beneath you- my typical cherry burl "full of voids and bark pockets".thank you --marekz----so when can i come over and see your wood-- i still would like to learn from you if you /we can get past this. --i love you man--mark

No....you don't "love" me so stop with that phony crap and it's unfortunate you took things so wrong about my offer to help you out. NO...you are not a threat to the wood supply world, but competition has brought the standards very high. I have many friends and customers in the knife supply biz having supplied much wood to them over the years and we all agree the bar continues to be raised because of competition. The first step to anything of commercial sales venture is establishing CREDIBILITY.

I do not appreciate nor have respect for your attack on me so get over it. Obviously you are degreed in psychology making those diagnoses?

Please do not contact me further and the offer to tutor you on wood cutting and proper grains is withdrawn...sheesh...who needs it!! continue attacking if it makes you feel better, but you will not get any more responses from me.

:pActually, i had deleted what i just wrote and im not going to write what i was going to. I had my doubts about our communications from the start -so instead of adding more negativity and conflict- i will just say -you know what the truth is-we can go back and forth. I real just want to say good luck with all you do and God bless you and yours--take care and i truly am sorry if i misread you ( but my gut feels like some of our correspondence have not been sincere) --Marekz - so my offer to come over is still open. Ill bring some food and a few of my prize pieces and we can talk about wood in general. We all have misunderstandings lets just be friends--seriously-mark- maybe i was just being too sensative:)
