I finally got a real anvil and a leg vise today. I found a guy in Chehalis, WA who restores leg vises, and I picked up a very nice 4" for $100. Then he took me to a guy just South of Chehalis who literally has a shed full of anvils for sale. I've never seen so many anvils in one place in my life. He had at least 60-70 of them, everything from Vulcans to Peter Wrights and Hay Buddens. I picked up a beautiful 110 lb. Hay Budden. The face is perfectly flat, great rebound, rings like a bell, with some minor chipping around the edges. The guy sells his anvils for $2-$4 a lb.

Does this anvil guy have a website?

No. He's only word of mouth and it's local pickup only. He doesn't ship. If you're in the area I can put you in touch. He has piles of leg vises as well (literally a pile of leg vises).

I'm officially jealous! Smithing tools in general are nearly non existent here in my part of Alaska. In my search for a post vise, I've only found one, and it was thoroughly trashed for $600. Pity he doesn't ship.:grumpy:

Where are you in Alaska? I have an airplane and have been meaning to fly up there at some point. Delivering a vise could be a good excuse to finally make the trip :)

Geekxx,

Shoot me a PM with his contact info (or email or visitor message). Not that I am really in that market right now, but it would be some one I want to have the contact info for.

I'm in Moses Lake, WA

Port Alsworth, roughly 170 miles west-southwest of Anchorage, halfway between Anchorage and Bristol Bay. If it could make it as far as Anchorage, arranging shipping the rest of the way would be a piece of cake. Wouldn't have room to throw in a decent 75-100# anvil in your back pocket while your at it would you?[emoji848]

Man... I love this place.

Thanks for this thread, and congrats on the scores.

I would appreciate the contact info for the guy selling leg vices too. I'm just across the border but am in Seattle every few months.

Thanks for the info.

I bet I know who you mean with the anvils, That guy was a local legend. I imagine it's his son selling off some of his collection, when I was starting smithing it just boggled my mind...
