Being in the great state of Florida we are never short on downed trees thanks to hurricanes. Well I bought a piece of 3.25in x6 in 4140 that's been HT to 27-33 for an improvised anvil here it is:

There just so happened to be a piece of oak that was cut down and movedabout 100 yards from my house and I scored this beautiful thing:

2 issues. 1 it's a tad short I was thinking of placing it on some 4x4 tgat were screwed together as a platform.
3) how should I mount the anvil? Weld a stake and drive it home or weld some angle iron and bolt them to the log?
Pretty excited. To be able to forge soon. :D

You probably should paint the ends of that log no matter what. It's already got a ton of small splits. You don't want to give your anvil a whack and have the log give out underneath it from a big split.

Yeah that would suck. I sprayed it down with shellac bit I'll paint it too

I would glue it down with urethane.
Just happen a few pints leftover from lining a vibratory bin. Glued right, wont come off and wont ring...
Otherwise, suggest weld a few tabs & fit lag screws.

I would've never thought of that. I have some gflex epoxy that would probably hold it better than urethane.
Or I was going to weld a 1/4 plate under the cylinder and lag bolt that to the stump

the way I calculate it. That steel is only fifteen pounds.

google Sea Robin Anvil - get more info, aim for a hundred pounds, or two

I was looking at those earlier. But through my searching I couldn't find any steel that size that wasn't the price of an anvil.
I figured mine is just a circular version of the old world anvil 4x4x4 steel cube.

It is light, but you've got it, no harm in trying it until better times now.
Sometimes, we can be surprised by what we can accomplish with the not-so-ideal. Think of it as a learning experience, and it beats having nothing to learn on! :)

That was my thinking. For less than 20 bucks shipped I got the hardened 4140 round bar. Better than using my garage floor haha

I think you'll probably be better off setting this in concrete with rebar under it rather than just setting it in this stump. I have a post anvil which is basically just a heavy splitting maul head wedged into a heavy log, and my anvil set in concrete is vastly superior. Search for posts about Rick Marchand's anvil - I based mine on his. If you don't have access to a welder and can't find large steel pipe like his is set in, a box made of 2x4's like mine has worked well so far. But you really want the anvil to act like as large a mass as possible.

Oh I've seen that just didn't know it was his. Just saw @JTknives YouTube of his post anvil. I'll figure something out or just bolt it to the stump

I watched that one the other day actually. I was thinking about using t post hammer an concrete the piece In. But I'm stubborn and really want it on that stump lol
