Scored an XM 18 3.5" Slicer!

So I have been carrying my new XM 18 since I got it, and it has really grown on me... I often find myself just staring in awe at the quality of the construction. This thing fits my hand like a glove, and even though I haven't really used it yet (I want to be 100% sure I am going to keep it before I start scratching it up) I am getting rather fond of it. Still not sure if I will keep it as it was quite expensive, but I'm leaning that way. Part of the reason I was OK buying it however, was because I knew I could get my money back if I decided to sell it. I said I would give myself 2 weeks to decide before I started using it at work. So we will see how it goes.. I do love it though!

I am a bit conflicted I will admit... Part of me is very hesitant to use such a pricey knife... but the other part of me realizes that the reason I spent so much on it was because I wanted a hardcore USER...

The Slicer grind is awesome, and it really is the perfect size for EDC (for me). Plus I have wanted one for years. Even though its a slicer instead of my sought after spanto, I think it may ultimately better suit my needs.

Not sure what the point of this post was... perhaps just venting a little indecision...

I am holding it now, and damn is this thing awesome!

Cheers!

Do not answer this, just ponder it...

Do you own a vehicle? Ever treat it a little rough or drive it a little hard? Costs a lot more than the knife and yet some ponder using the knife. A bit baffling, no?

And most vehicles lose value over time, not so true with high end knives like the XM.

Consider this. That knife will last you a lifetime and you can be confident that you can use it for anything and you are 100% covered. Do you own anything that has that kind of warranty? Car? Phone? TV? Watch? How much $$$ will you spend on Internet access over the next 5 years? Expensive is a "relative" concept. But when you consider the amount of enjoyment and confidence you can have with this knife it's damn cheap IMO!

Although I have not yet convinced myself to EDC an expensive knife, my favorite argument is "life is short, why not enjoy it?".

Life is Short and should be enjoyed. I do not think ones enjoyment, sense of worth nor identity should be derived from "Objects" BUT assuming all is in order and one enjoys such things - then by ALL means "ENJOY"!
Why leave stuff "Untouched" for the next Guy? Makes no sense.
It's like covering a couch in plastic. The thing absolutely sucks to sit on BUT the day it gets donated to the Church Bazaar - it's in perfect condition even though it was never enjoyed.
That was an example I remember from childhood, didn't make sense then and it still doesn't all these years later.
I don't trash my stuff BUT I damn well use it.
BooYah!

Yep, only items kept perfect for loved ones to inherit are kept pristine.

And plastic covered couches outside of public areas were puzzling. Didn't most cover the plastic with a fabric cover or throw of some sort? Amusing in an odd way for sure.

Items I own that have not been used yet are just that...not used Yet!

Of all the knives I own, only 2 don't see the inside of my pocket. Niether of them was my most expensive. When I opened my CRK Annual and realized it was too pretty to carry, I decided not to buy anymore of them. Back to Hinderers and normal Sebs....

The car analogy is such a perfect one. How many people actually take proper care of their cars after the thousands they spend. Yet some people cringe at using a $400 knife or mock others for spending as much. Just use it and enjoy

In my town (no public transport), I consider a vehicle a necessity for almost every, working adult.
I consider a knife to be a luxury, especially high-end knives.

Not a great analogy, imo.

Spend your money however you want. There's no need to justify to anyone else. (Except wives.;))
As you said "Just use it and enjoy." :)

Man's "Oldest Tool" ? IMO, an Absolute Necessity. To leave my home without would not be an option, I have turned around many times.
As a Man, I have a responsibility (possibly due to my training) to be prepared for anything and everything.
A quality Knife that I can depend on is a "must have".
Again, IMO.

I Stopped carrying "pocket jewelry" many many years ago. Everything I buy, Everything I endure its weight - must be Mission Built.
I don't seek/buy/own the Best because I need an ego boost (stopped caring about ego late last century) Everything Must be the Best IF it's the Best and it better perform OR it's Gone.
I carry a Hinderer XM as my EDC. There is a Hinderer in my Bug-out Bag, There are Hinderers and Guns in my rigs, in my house and with-in my reach at all times.
I live in the N/E Mountains of Pa. Home of beauty and wildlife (Bear, Mountain Lion, Timber rattlers, etc) unfortunately - Meth Labs and Every Gang known and not yet heard of about 8 miles from my house.
Thank God for Hinderer's, "Stand Your Ground Law" , Guns and Ammo.
Is what it is.

Oh crap! Smash, bang, pop, roll, scream, cry, shout, smoke, fear!!!! Vehicle is mangled, you're battered and broken, your loved one is unconscious in the back seat and you cannot reach the seat belt release. Fire! Car's compromised, may explode, gotta get out...NOW!

Is the knife now a necessity rather than a luxury?

I've had to cut my seat-belt off while I was in an over-turned vehicle.
I used my knife, yes. :D

If you're talking about tools needed to avoid death, I think there are far more likely scenarios that need to be considered first.

I've carried a knife since I was a young whipper-snapper in the Appalachian Mountains, but I don't consider it a necessity for my life.

I'm interested to hear other (wrong) opinions though. :p

You keep poking, but I don't play "whose the biggest Internet badazz", so I'm done trying to explain this to the ignorant.

Btw, I'm the most ignorant person I know, so it's not meant in a derogatory manner, just a factual one.

I... don't really know how to take that, but OK. :)

Knives rule.

I'm not sure what that law is yet, will look it up in a second, but it seems it's the complete backward law that i had back in Florida where someone could sue you if they hurt themselves on your property :barf:

Still stand by the care analogy being a good one. I've known far too many people that didn't know how to change a tire or check their fluids. Simple maintenance things that always end up costing more. It may be an item of necessity for some, but they should still take care of it. *relives memories of helping friends* :grumpy:

I was in a car as well that was overturned, but thankfully the sealtbelt ejected normally. Though having a knife on me would have settled that if it hadn't.

What, 3.5 slicer, no more pics?

Hahaha... I have gone without my cell phone, my water, my lunch and most other items if I'm late out the door.. BUT I will turn around everytime if I forget my knife... Late or not ;)

I'm not the type to start things or stir the pot. I don't intentionally insult or disparage others. And I will not only firmly back my beliefs and those of my friends, but will not escalate or fuel a disagreement into something where no one wins.

So, in the spirit of Web-based respect and kindness, I demonstrate my feelings and refrain any inflamatory retort.

Your use of so many negative words and phrases somewhat offended me. I may have misinterpreted.

I'm sorry if I bothered you with my posts. I'm trying to work on being a more compassionate person, and it's pretty darn hard. Sometimes my negative feelings sneak through.

Anyway, I apologize for starting the argument in this thread. I need to learn to conduct myself better on the forums.

XM-18 slicer-grind FTW. :D
