Scored some mystery steel.

That appears to be a blade from a commercial chipper. Most are D-2, but that isn't a guarantee. Try contacting Toro's tech dept., and ask what the EXACT steel type is for that part number.

Ill check when I get the chance. Thanks stacy. I do know it work hardens fast. I cut it in 1/3 and only got my band saw 3/4 of the way. Then it just scated across the.steel.
I've been trying to stay away from (unknown) but the shipping of my steel is more then I'm buying right now. So not really worth getting it.

It should be hardened right now....at least the cutting edge part. I used to sharpen those for a local landscaper, and they are both tough and hard. They were also pretty thick.
Seriously, a piece of knife size CPM-D2 is dirt cheap...why mess with some mystery steel that may have a complex HT...if you even knew what it was.

Kelly Cupples ships for free on orders over $100. Not hard to get an order up for that, at least not for me. Kelly's email octihunter@charter.net email him and he will send you a current price list. Aldo at NJ steel baron is great to deal with also. More than pays for itself in less aggravation.

If your profile was filled out , someone nearby might offer some steel for free, or tell you where to get it in town.

Don is a good friend of mine and he knows his stuff but even at that you will not know exacty how to heat treat the "MISTERY STEEL" with out send it in for testing. Make something fun out of it and make sure you keep it cool when working it so you dont mess the heat treatment. Then buy some "KNOWN STEEL"

They want $11 for the steel and $19 to ship

Look at it this way. 19.00 is 5 gallons of gasoline. Where can you go buy good steel on 5 gals of gas? plus your time to do it.

If you buy 4 bars of steel the shipping price only goes up a couple of bucks, the cost is spread out.

Flatground.com. The shipping won't kill you when you're only ordering a piece at a time.
