Scotch brite finishes

It is without a few more hours...
I set the expectations up front with my customers and they understand it’s a performance knife and I’ve haven’t had any problem selling them at the price I want

Tim Wright is the only one that I know of that hand rubs out wear resistance steels like PD-1 to a high grade polished finish scratch free.

Kevin Cox finishes pre heat treat, and has a nice finish. I set the expectations up front too. “This is a performance knife, not a pretty knife....” People accept that.

I see that tru grit has diamond belts and I have to wonder how they would work.

I’m going to order some, and silicon carbide belts to try. I just spent a ton on handle materials and steel this month though.

Warren - maybe a stupid question .... when you refer to silicon carbide belts .... are you talking about scotch bright belts, or regular 2x72 belts with a fine grit abrasive made from silicon carbide?

regular belts. I can get them on Amazon in Canada, but they are $20.00/belt if you buy minimum 6. I’ll probably buy some next month.

So I have actually been using these a ton. Nick Wheeler has a video about getting a good working finish with a 120 grit followed by the coarse SB with the VFD @ ~30%.

I have a number of pics of some various combinations, I’ll post some up tomorrow.

I tried some of those a while ago, with grits up to something like 800. At least in my hands the finer grits (like above 400) started producing a splotchy “hazy” appearing finish. Fwiw ... not sure if it was a result of uneven blade surface, or inherent properties of a grinder, or quickly dulling abrasive, but i came to the conclusion I would just not go there .... and instead go to the scotch bright belt and call it a day...
