Danny I'm just pretty damned sure it is the coarse grit because of its intended purpose as well as comparing them to my regular Scotch-Brite pads. I don't know about Japan but all the kitchen sponge/scrubbers have the green pads on them here.
The maroon is the finest grit with the grey somewhere inbetween the green and the maroon.
That's according to the chart they had at Home Depot one time long ago.
I don't know if there are any other colors as that's all they had.
They were listed as:
Green = Coarse.
Grey = Medium.
Maroon = Fine.

Oh yea, almost forgot. They said the maroon compares to 0000 steel wool but I don't know if I agree with that or not. Maybe it's because the steel wool gets all shredded and embedded with wood or finish dust and doesn't cut as well but the steel wool still seems finer to me albeit a helluva lot messier.:grumpy:

Auto body shops are good for the papers. If you need 0000 steel wool, try a crafts shop like AC Moore, Michael's, etc. The 0000 is amazing, it puts a mirror finish on stainless. I have a recurve fighter from DMKnives that gets kydex scratches on the guard, this takes it right out.
A lot of my HI khuks have the scotchbrite finish- I like it better than the mirror finish on working khuks. I do a mustard or vinegar etch and then the scotchbrite, it puts a nice patina on them, and they can handle being in the sheath in my car's trunk in humid weather for long periods without getting any rust.
