Scotch Question

I was looking for something to drink the other day and ran across a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red left over from some party long past.

So I poured myself a glass and took a sip. And I said to myself, "Is it supposed to taste like this?" Most Scotch tastes to me like like vodka filtered through the ashes of a campfire (The Macallan being a notable exception), but this stuff had none of that, just a chemical or medicinal smell and taste. Hints of vanilla and honey maybe, but overwhelmed by nail polish remover, I think. Is it just my unsophisticated palate, or is this stuff really bad?

Why does this stuff even exist? It can't just be because it's realtively inexpensive. For a few dollars less, you could get a bottle of Jim Beam or Rebel Yell; for a couple dollars more, Sazerac Rye (my current whisk(e)y of choice). I just don't get it.

i agree jw red is bad,,gotta stick with the more expensive malts to get something good. but for me bourbon is the way to go!!!

Red label is used mostly to mix it with coca cola. Red label is awful imo. Currently I'm drinking Johnnie Walker green label. I like that one alot.

I think a bottle of red label started my acid reflux back in college. Forgive me boss for what I say next...

I use to spend a lot of $$$ on scotch and I like a lot of em, but anymore its whiskey for me. Preferably bourbon. :)

Too many good choices to pay tax to import scotch imho:cool:

Try "White Horse" if you get the chance. It is a blend..., but it is inexpensive AND it was the preferred choice of Ernest Hemingway. Not bad at all. But, I prefer bourbon.

best bourbon I've had is Willets. It's a single barrel bourbon. Fantastic flavors... lots of caramel and vanilla, but not too sweet.

This is a must-buy fellas... my local shop has difficulty keeping it in stock.

White Horse. Really. I tried white horse a few years back and it was absolutely the worst drink I ever had. Maybe they changed something but I am not willing to take the chance that it is still the most vile drink in existence. Just my opinion though. To each his own.

We used to have a roullette wheel of liquer in the office and if you lost a hand of cards you had to spin the wheel and take a double shot of whatever you landed on. We referred to it as riding the white horse. Some interesting knives and forum posts used to come about after a few rides on the white horse.

Maybe the white horse wasn't that bad alone but when mixed with coconut rum, tequila, bourbon and hypnotic it was horrible. I guess I should give it a fair shot with a cleansed pallet.

I have been drinking Wild Turkey American Honey since I tried it. DE-licious! I am not into scotch, I have to agree that it tastes like alcohol filtered through dirty gym socks filled with ashes...IMO.

I like Glenlivet, Lagavulin, and I've only had it once (way too pricey) but JW Blue was pretty damn good. I like me some bourbon and whiskey too. And I agree with Garth, tequila is always a good way to go.

Haven't had Johnnie Red in many years, so can't help on the taste question.

White Horse or Ballantines are my (cheap) house Scotch, as they both have some decent smoke malt flavor. But the last two years I find myself drinking more Bourbon and Gin than Scotch.

Try the Honey Jack! Also, IMHO, forget the whiskey and Bourbon. Get some Bundeburg rum!

You are correct. Red label is the worst they have to offer. You are better off with any number of US made bourbons and whiskeys that cost less.

That being said, the top of the line blue label is sublime.

I am a Bourbon drinker. When I want something with more depth I reach a good single batch like Knob Creek or Bookers. However, on those special occasions The McCallans 18 yo and a FFOX are second to none together.
