Scotchbrite belt after disk sander?

I'm planning to finally get a disk grinder (I'll probably be going with the Rod Nielsen system), and I'm curious to know if any of you do scotchbrite belt finishes after using your disks. I find that when I finish on my grinder, I really need to have the scratch pattern of my final grit (usually #240) going in the same direction I want my scotchbrite to go or else it looks terrible. Since that's not possible on the disk, I was wondering what people do. I assume that if you go to a high enough grit on the disk, you can then go to scotchbrite and erase the disk scratch pattern?

I have and use a Nielsen magnetic disc grinder. It's a great way to go and he's a great guy to deal with.

TenebrOs. The scotchbrite will not erase the scratch pattern from the disc sanding. You will have to hand sand the blade . If you want the scratch pattern to go vertically then you must sand the blade in both directions with finer and finer paper until the scratch pattern is gone and then use the scotchbrite belt to make the scratch pattern. You may need to buff the blade lightly before using the scotchbrite belt. You will have to use sandpaper finer than 240 grit to do this. That is my opinion. I also use a Neilson system disc sander like Frank Niro and it is the best. Larry

I usually use 320 Rynowet on my Neilson disk prior to hand sanding, but have also gone back to the grinder and used Gator belts, anywhere from 65m to 30m with good success when I wanted a "brushed" sort of finish. That gives a consistent background for the scotchbrite finish. As Larry says, the scotchbrite isn't really going to make disk scratches disappear.
The disk is such a great tool for getting the last of the 120 and coarser scratches out, so anything you do after is going to look better.

I've been grinding Ti liners on my disc grinder, I go all the way up to 800 grit and it comes out with a near mirror finish.
Then I can hand sand it or do other finish I want.

Thank you for the replies. Would cork belts work to take out the disk scratches? I'm looking for something aggressive enough to create a new scratch pattern, but with more "give" than normal belts.

TenebrOs, Yes, Cork belts give a fine scratch finish...favorites are 400 and 600 grit belts. Be sure to push a piece of scrap steel ( I use round bar) against new belts for about ten minutes to break them in and flatten the cork particles before using to finish a blade. They come in grits from 220 to 1000. Tru Grit sells cork belts for a good price. They could be exactly what your looking for. Larry
