A few months ago I was at Ed Storch's Knife Symposium where one of the presenters mentioned buying scotchbrite belts to speed finishing jobs up. I bought a fine and a very fine (not cheap!) but didn't really think about using them until today.

I was doing a satin finish on a couple of knives and was not happy with a couple of scratches I missed, well needless to say these belts took them right out. Not only that but brought the whole blade very close to a completed satin finish.

After using the belts I thought about just leaving the finish at that stage but decided in the end to finish to 400grit by hand, they weren't all that far off though.

I'm totally sold on these belts!!!

I have a question about this.

Are you using the belt perpendicular or parallel to the blade?

If I got one, I would have to use it perpendicular, I'm not set up to use it parallel (trying would make it awful, too).

So, can I still use one of these?

On working knives, I use it perpendicular to the blade.
For a parallel finish, I would hand rub with wet or dri paper.

BTW, I don't use these belts to cover up grinding marks, but to blend them into an even pattern. I grind my blades to a good finish, then satin them down with the scotchbrite belts.

I found a place locally by pure accident who is an abrasives distributor and their prices are extremely reasonable. I paid $2.25 each for Scotch Brite belts in 1x42.

They make them to order in any size you like and deliver anywhere.

Their prices on other belts and discs were also about 1/2 the price of Supergrit across the board.

Let me know and I'll post their info. They have a web page but it only lists AO prices, everything else is POR.

I put in my order on Friday morning for about 70 belts and discs of different sizes and the guy met me 1/2 way Saturday morning to deliver - nice people for sure :)

**Edited to fix a screw-up

I was using the belts parrallel to the blade to get a bolster to tip satin finish. Once the scratches I missed were removed I hand sanded to get the final finish that I wanted.

You could use them perpendicular, when I was using them I played with that a little and it worked fine.

Sean,

where did you get your scotchbrite belts? I have a Sears 2x42 that also can use 1x42 belts. I am interested in finding sources for scotchbrite belts!

My belts are actually 2x72. I bought them from Downie Knife Supply in Ontario but they are also available from Texas knife supply and I think Sheffield's. I can't say for sure if they have other sizes but I think they do. All of the above have websites which I believe is their name.com

I'd like to get that info off you Cpirtle.

I use the Scotchbrite belts perpendicular on most of my knives. I do my blades up to 800 grit and then go over them with a very fine (grey) Scotchbrite belt. Then, I spray the blade down, each side, with a good dose of WD-40 and go over the blade again with the same grey belt. I get a much finer finish this way as the WD-40 seems to "float" the blade over the belt.

Just my little trick.;)

The web page only has pricing for AO but they carry/make everything, just call or e-mail for pricing.

I was wrong about the ScotchBrite prices I paid, they were $1.70 each for 1x42

$0.85 each for any grit of silicon carbide in 1x42 also.

I hope they work out for you, nice people and nice prices.

GL Pearce sells 2 by 72's for $10 a pop. I been gettin em from them for years and they're excellent! 1-800-938-0021
Been a while since I ordered any so they mighta went up a little but they're still alot lower than the knife supply outfits.

Wow that's a good priceon the 2x72 belts! I will definitely call them when I need more.

Thanks,
Sean

I don't have a 2x72 but just out of curiosity I sent an e-mail to Discount Abrasives to get a price on them.

Here's what I got back:

4Pk.) Coarse $19.80
4Pk.) Medium $19.80
4Pk.) Fine $19.80
+ shipping

At less than $5 each it sounds like a steal to me.

Nope, I meant 2x72 - just updated post to correct error. Thanks!

J Nielson we do something similar to that when we oil polish shotgun receivers I cannot say what oil we use do to company policy but to some reason I never thought about using it on my knives

J. Nielson I just read your tip on facebook about the wd40 gonna give it a try. I have the red scotchbrite belt from jantz. I think it is coarse. How much difference is the finish from course to fine. Sean, I never even thought about hand sanding after the scotchbrite, great idea thanks for sharing.
