I recently used a scotchbrite wheel at a friends shop and have fallen in love with it for cleaning edges on fresh cut steel. I'm now convinced that I need something similar in my shop for cleaning up parts on the forges I build. Here's my question, do the belts hold up as well as the wheels, or do they fall apart quickly?

Had mine for about 6 months so far. They work the same, if not better than brand new. I imagine they'll easily last another year or two. Money well spent if you ask me.

It was an 8" wheel that I used. I'm thinking to get a 2x72 medium for deburring handles and burners on the forges, along with it's knifemaking uses.

I love mine. I have a 3M very fine (dark green) and it's what I use to finish all of my blades. A spray of WD40 while the belt is running will make it blend things a bit better. Its more forgiving if you slip too. Some of these scotchbrites will remove alot of material.

I have a medium "Bear Tex" belt (maroon), and it's abrasive enough to throw sparks. I used it on a tanto once, and it completely washed out my grind lines. That one should be plenty rough for what you're doing.

BTW, these belts last forever. I just keep soaking mine in a bucket of hot water with dawn, and brushing them with a stiff nylon brush. The WD40, should you go that way, will kinda gum up the belt after awhile.

They kind of stretch and contract alot I found. Some days they are so tight I can barely get the things on. Other days they are loose and try to flop around on the grinder.

Short answer is no..you want a deburring wheel. Check the MSC metalworking flyer on their website, they usually have them on sale. There are like the belt different "grits".

You can find ScotchBrite wheels on Ebay. I use the wheels for the kind of work you are talking about the leave the belts for knife work

There's a Scotch deburring wheel pretty much living on the spindle end of my skanky ol' Grizzly, and I use it all day for general cleanup. Pop's is sending me my first Scotchbrite belt, can't wait to try it!
