Scotchbrite belts

So feeling a little sheepish, I ordered 3 scotchbrite belts.

Anyone have a list of the grits?

I have a maroon, blue, and grey. Im fairly certain the red is a coarse but past that no idea. Ordered these from tru grit abrasives if anyone can help I would be quite grateful.

IIRC red is coarse, blue is medium, grey is fine. I have a couple red belts and a blue one and I can't figure out what to do with them myself. I bought them because we use scotchbrite extensively in metal fab, but the perception I had regarding a "good" finish I think is skewed at work.

Good for deburring I guess.

Blue is fine and grey is super fine. Blue is aluminum oxide and grey is silicon carbide. Belt finish to 400 and 600 grit first, then use the non-woven belt after that. Smoothes everything out.

Hoss, do you use the "fine" first, then finish with "super fine" belts? If blade is taken to 400-600 grit prior to scotchbrite belt, does the "fine" give a decent matt finish if I follow the scotchbrite with a cork belt? OR - does it need the "super fine" belt to finish?

Thanks, Ken

The finer the belt finish the better the final finish. The blue belts by 3m produce a very good working finish on most steels except for high vanadium steels.

The grey very fine non-woven belts require a finer initial belt finish to look good.

Thanks Hoss - I think I'll order one of the blue belts. Sounds like it should do what I'm looking for.

Thanks again,
