I am working on a knife right now. I have hand sanded to 400 grit so far and I am planning on doing a scotchbrite belt finish. I have a medium and a fine belt. I have a couple of questions before I continue though.

Is 400 grit high enough to sand to before sb?

Is it ok to hand sand horizontally then use the sb vertically?

Should I use the sb before ht as well as after?

Thank you

400 is high enough.

You can sand horizontally then use the SB belt vertically without issue.

I don't see much point in using the SB belt pre HT, especially if you need the thin out the blade post HT.
