Hello everyone. I am in the market for a custom folder. I want a high quality EDC. I want this knife mainly for self defense and light everyday tasks. I have been looking at Scott Cooks Lochsa folder in s90v or one of Allen's knives. Both of these fine craftsmen have exceptional tallent. I can’t decide and I would love to have some input from everyone. Which knife is higher in quality, better materials, will retain edge longer, more comfortable to use and carry, more suitable for defense, and basically just personal taste likes and dislikes? I don’t have a specific knife for Allen as you never know what will be available next but please compare his work as a whole. Thanks

The Lochsa is a great folder and a marvel of construction, but the design isn't geared towards self defence as much as general utility use. None of Allen's current offerings really seem geared in that direction either. You can get more bells and whistles on an Elishewits, but Scott Cook makes a flawless folder.

What are your thoughts on strider knives? I was looking at the FNG. They look pretty serious.

If I was looking for a folder for self defense, I would go with something from RJ Martin, JW Smith or Phil Boguszewski. Others I would look at would be Bob Lum, Kit Carson, Larry Davidson, Greg Lightfoot and Kirby Lambert.

The Strider knives are nice, but I would lean towards a custom.

One thing you need to assess is the opening system. For a SD knife, I really would want a thumbdisk, or maybe a spyderhole, but no studs. Of course this is an individual preference...

Personally, if I could find one in my price range, I would get a JW Smith for SD.

Thanks for the great input. I have been taking a look at some Darrel Ralph & Ryan Bailey designs, Lightfoot, Brian Tighe, and I found a really impressive tactical knife by Ryan Wilson & Darrel Ralph. Many of these designers use s30v steel but I wish a few tried s90v. How does Stainless BG-42 stack up to s30v?

BG-42 is a fine blade steel, more than a few makers and users prefer it to S30V and other CPM steels. S90V is great but very difficult to sharpen if you let the blade get dull, very strong and can take a fine edge.

If you are serious about a self defense knife you are going to have to get your hands around the piece before you decide.

You also could not go wrong with a knife made by the guy that just posted all the Xs. I don't think of Tom as a maker of self defense folders, but ones that are excellent for all around use.

Indeed, Mr. Mayo makes some awesome, awesome knives!!! I am lusting after a TNT & TMX myself!

I have started to really gain interest in Darrel Ralph designs. I must say that he builds a great looking knife. I wonder if the claims are true of their superb function and highly sophisticated build. Can you get more sophisticated with knife custom technology than with Darrel Ralph?

p.s. I have been bitten. I must and will have a Lochsa but now I can’t just walk away with one beautiful knife. I have been searching for the last folder but I do not believe it may be possible.?

How about Bob Terzoula, he makes a lot of designs from tactical to gents. I've carried a couple of his over the years. The price point is excellent for a custom folder.

Bob basically started the tactical knife craze with his ATCF.

TheKnifeCollector: What are the specs on the two knives that you ordered? I like the AXD allot. Both are fantastic knives. I almost pulled the trigger on a gun hammer but the blade wasn’t s30v it was a cpm 154 blade. I hear they are both great steels but which tops which one?
