Scout Carry addition to RC-5 Kydex Sheath

Hi everyone.

I love my RC-5 (#1933), but prefer a small-of-back (scout) carry.
The factory sheath is decent, but weaving some 550 cord through the lashing holes didn't give enough stability, so I made something to allow me to scout carry and attach/remove the sheath without taking off the belt.

It involved:

2 10" straps (I used ballistic nylon, bit you could use leather)
Snap kit (I used 4 snaps, 2 per strap) [purchased at REI]
4 Chicago bolts [purchased at KnifeKits.com]

Measure the strap length (mine are 10"), cut and sear the edges to prevent fraying (like burning the end of 550 cord)

Measure everything out, and mark the hole positions for the attachment points to the sheath (I used a paint pen so it would show up on the black nylon)

Heat a nail (held with a vise-grip pliers) over a candle and burn holes for the Chicago bolts - 2 per strap.

Attach the straps to the sheath with the Chicago bolts

Mark where you want your snaps (male and female parts)

Heat a nail (held with a vise-grip pliers) over a candle and burn holes for the snap assemblies - I used 2 per strap.

If everything doesn't line up perfectly, you can soak the strap in water and put it on the sheath to dry - it will stretch/shrink to fit better.

It's non-permanent and removing the straps reverts it back to stock form.

My next trick is to mod the leading strap (closest to handle) to have a loop for a ferro rod.

Thanks for posting that over here since some of these weirdos never leave the ESEE forum teat!

Man you guys are really making me want a 5.

Ha - no problem - it actually stemmed from a discussion on YouTube with the guy that posted a review which convinced me to get my RC-5 in the first place.
We started talking in the comments about the sheath and such, then I just shot & posted the video today.

Tartidi - that is a really neat modification. I like the scout carry too, but it is often hard to always to get it right, looks like your fix does it.

Thanks for posting to mod.

Mike

I really feel best carrying my fixed blades scout style, it is by far the most comfortable position for me. I have a a leather X on the back side to loop around my bel; works great.
thanks for the post, I havent tryed the rc5 out, but im pretty smitten with my rc6

Wow very fancy sir! I cheated and modified the MOLLE clips from my RC-4 so I can carry my 5 this way.

Cheers!

those molle clips drive me nucking futs, they're way too high profile and ugly as sin. Extremely bulky whereas a simple canvas, leather or cordura sheath can accomplish the same thing with a quarter of the bulk. Those clips would dig into my back all day long, tear up the bottom of my pack, my shirt, my belt and my pants...

Thanks!

It was about 3 hours of head-scratching/paper prototypes, measuring + re-measuring (I didn't want to destroy a perfectly good belt by accident!) and about 15 minutes of actual assembly time - most of that was waiting for the nail to warm back up after each hole was burned through.

If you have the right tools you could take it a step further and put rivets in the holes on the straps that the Chicago screws go through... not necessary, but gives it an even further finished look.

I actually bought a sheet of kydex and a bunch of other parts thinking I was going to make some sort of strap/baseplate assembly but the simplest idea was just the 2 straps... can even still access the sheath tension adjuster.

They're really not that bad...kinda soft and flexy and (at least for me) pretty comfortable. But I do agree that its not the best setup. I'm liking what mr. tarditi did up there.

I find that the cheapish black nylon BDU belts work well for cool projects like this. I always keep an extra one around just in case I get an itch to make stuff.

Thanks! That was my first YouTube vid (I've posted others that were not made by me). I used the standard Windows Movie Maker for the titles and cropping. It was all in 1 take, ad lib. You can actually hear my laptop boot up in the background, though!

I will say, it's a bit addictive - I'm thinking of other vids to make now!

Awesome mod, gonna definitely try it with my 4

I stitched on a loop to hold my ferro rod - I carry a Firesteel.com Armageddon (striker, mag rod, ferro rod), which is a little bulkier than the popular LightMyFire firesteel.

The loop is attached to the main strap, I just stitched it on with a Speedy Stitcher - if you don't have one of these things in your BOB you need to get one!

Tarditi, Great rig to Scout carry. By the looks of it you can adjust you pattern to work on any ESEE.

Thanks!

Yes, you can change the length of the webbing and even select different web widths based on what you have available.
