Scout knife question

Look for an older Case 6445R, discontinued in 1978. Built like a tank and with jigged bone handles and CV blades.

It looks like I should hold out for a bone handled scout. It'll be hard delaying gratification, but I guess I have enough knives to tide me over. Maybe if I close my eyes and pretend I can convince myself that my Imperial Cattleman is a scout.

Christian, If you do a little looking , you can still find the old Case Scouts with red bone. I've never owned one yet, but the ones I've seen, are incredible looking, and may just be the Holy Grail of Scouts IMHO.

But I'm a little biased about red bone :D

well the Soldier from victorinox/wenger is a scout pattern or looks like one
I'm liking the pattern more and more!

Problem is, it's too good a condition to use it.
I end up carrying the old plastic handled beaters instead.

The Case 6445R is one of my favorite knives. I'm always looking for another one so I can carry one of the two. With only one, I just want to leave this one at home. I want to give it to my son one day.

I finally got me a scout! It took a while, but I found one with carbon steel blades and jigged bone handles. It’s an old Camillus, with what looks to be Rogers bone scales. I probably paid too much for the knife, but I got it for a price I can live with. From what I’ve seen, old scouts with bone handles definitely command a premium compared to the scouts with composite handles.

I’ll post pictures when I receive the old Camillus.

Nice to hear that

Bone is the real thing on these knives and I would've thought it implies that the knife is of higher more appealing quality too.

Look forward to seeing it:thumbup:

Man. You guys keep bumping up an urge. Back when I was a Cub Scout I tied for first place with another kid in the greater Cincinnati area for selling the most tickets to the big annual scout deal at Cincinnati Gardens (this was back in the 60s). Besides the savings bond I got a Boy Scout knife. To the best of memory and comparing memory to later photos and hand feel (I have an interesting memory) I feel pretty confident it was a Camillus or similar quality. I would love to have one of those again.

I've managed to acquire a few used Kamp Kings just because. I even picked up a 440C scout blank on the bay. It's complete and finished, just needs scales. I may get around to that within the next ten years I hope. But, I would love to have something like that old knife. Like you, I want one of the nice ones.

Dab nab it, Christian, I just put a used Springer 1911 in layaway, and now you got me thinking about that scout knife again. Oy. See ya on that "other" board.

Congrats on scoring the knife, btw!

Good seeing you around Amos. I was never a scout, but the pattern appeals to me because of one man. Growing up my love of knives was stimulated by the usual suspects -- my grandfather, MacGyver, and Rambo. More recently, I've added Carl (jackknife) to the list. I'm sure you already know this, but that man knows how to tell a story. Reading his tales of Mr. Van and his Remington really piqued my imagination and as a result I wanted a bone handled scout of my own. This Camillus isn't as nice as an old Remington, but it should do nicely.

Here's a picture of the knife I picked up. It's the seller's picture and I'll post some more when I receive it.

BTW Post a review of that Springer when you get it. You're in for a treat, my most treasured gun is a Springfield 1911.

AG Russell used to make/ sell a "premium scout" with bone handles a while back. I think Camillus made them for him. Not only does it have nice bone scales and a cool acorn shield, but the master blade is 154 CM. I have one, it's very nice. You might be able to find one of those on the secondary market. I've heard rumors that he's planning on bringing out a new version at some point.

Here's a pic of one I shamefully ripped from the internets. Not mine, but mine looks just like it.

I bought an older carbon steel cub scout knife (Camillus) on ebay recently for $10.00. It has the jigged blue plastic scales. At the gun & knife show in tulsa last weekend I got lucky and picked up an old bone handled remington scout knife. It is in very good shape and put together better than any other knife of that pattern I have seen (including A G Russsell's). I got it for $40.00. It was my lucky day.

Those old Remingtons fetch a pretty penny, even when they're all used up. If it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate it you could post a picture of your knife Gene.

I haven't got a chance to take any photos yet but will try in the next day or so.I will post them as soon as I do.

I managed to get some pictures taken this evening. I am not sure if this is an official boy scout knife or not. The shield is worn smooth. The blades have just a little play in them but no more than most brand new Old Timers use to if you got them at wal mart. They still snap open and closed.

You guys are killing me. I love Scout pattern knives, bail and all. Some very nice ones in this thread indeed! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing Gene, it looks like you got a good one there. Somebody obviously got a lot of use out of that knife.
