This has always been a pet peeve of mine.
The knife companies have made variations of stockman, jack, trapper and other patterns. They've substituted a punch or pen blade on stockmen, put wharncliffes on trappers in place of spey's, and other modifications of the like. Yet Camillus, Schrade, PAL, Robson, Imperial, almost never varied the pattern of the scout knife. Or even expanded it a bit. I'd have thought that with the rising poularity of the Swiss Army knife as a knife form of it's own, that Camillus or somebody wouldhave had the idea "Hey, look what the Swiss are doing. We can do that better. We'll even have jigged bone scales." No, it never happened. All through the 60's, 70's, and even 80's, I'd have thought that with dwindling market shares, they would have tried it. Instead they just went under.
I'd have loved to see the scout pattern expanded. With American know how and old time materials, we could have outdone the Swiss at their own game. Imagine a Camillus made tinker with jigged bone and 1095 carbon steel.
