I'm looking for recommendations on good scout knives, I just love the pattern. I've got a Boker (not too happy with it) and an AG Russell premium scout (fantastic knife!) and of course a few of the Victorinox and Wenger alox SAKs.

I'm looking for something with a carbon steel main blade, I like bails as well.

I would thing that the odds of finding a good condition old Camillus are very high. From the 1030's to the 1950's, they must have made millions of them, especially durring WW2. Untill the early 1960's these had carbon blades. You could try haunting the locaal pawn shops, antique/junk shops, flea markets, and such.

I rescued an old Camillus at a yard sale, made sometimes in the 1950's. Once I rubbed it down with some 0000 steel wool and some oil, cleaned up the worst of the neglect, it turned out to be a great knife. The carbon blade gets that fingerprint grabbing kind of sharp thats a little scary. It's become one of my edc rotation.

And yes, I do love a bail, brings back good memories.

What's the problem you have with the Boker?

Jackknife, sadly pawn shops and antique stores are not an option here. These knives are not common at all in Argentina. I've found some nice penknives, but not much else.

Gmountain, the fit and finish on the Boker is good, but the blades are quite useless. It took me a lot of work to get them sharp, and they only stayed that way for a very short time.

I'm a good sharpener, and I don't mind touching up my knives often, but these blades seemed to be made out of putty. The same happened to me with a Boker Copperhead, it looked beautiful but was rather useless. I bought the scout and copperhead from local stores in Buenos Aires, so I don't know whether they were made 100% in Germany or if they were finished in their Argentina plant. My girlfriend gave me a Boker stockman with 440C blades in Chile and it's fantastic, cuts like a dream.

If you can get ebay sellers to send them to you in Argentina, there are a lot of Ulster scout knives out there. Decent quality, and they can be had for as little as $10. Carbon steel blades, delrin handles.

Hallo.
This is also the Swedish problem. I like scouts the most and even though its such a usable pattern its hard to find. Its a wonder Case and queen for ex dot have them in their basic lines of knifes. Its true that case has a scout jr in their line. I have one and its very nice but also small. Is it the SAKs that takes all of the marketplace. I have tried to get a good regularsized one with bonehandle for years without success.

Now I feel bad for you non US gents.:(

IF you can find an online auction seller willing to overseas ship, the older Camillus Scout/Utility is a great knife. Worth the hassel.

Mine is the only Utility I have left (aside from a WWII Kingston MLK). It gets carry time when I want something more traditional than my SAK.

Mine is post-war with the old style can opener, the same style as the WWII Army contract.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, Todd A! I guess I need to try eBay (I hate it).

NirreBosse, if you don't have one already I highly recommend the AG Russell premium scout. I've got the jigged bone handle version and it gets lots of use. The 154CM blade is quite nice.

Amen on cheap Ulsters. I'm not a huge fan of the pattern, but I have an old Ulster scout and it's a tank. The carbon steel blade takes a righteous edge as well.

Franciscomv,

I have good news for you. I recently heard that Bear and son has been contracted by Remington arms to make new boy scout knives. These knives will be made on the old equipment that the previous remington knives were made on. The first model will be an exact reproduction of the RS3333 model it will have a carbon steel blade and a two piece can opener. It will also have a jigged bone handle with the exact jigging pattern specific to that model. I read about this on http://scoutknives.net/ .This link will give you all the information. It is slated for release in 2009, but I haven't seen any out yet.:)

I hear that Bulldog make Scout knives in carbon ,German made.If they are like the Jack I bought then they are very worthwhile, decent price nice finish.

You'll have to do the Bay, if I hadn't I would have only a tiny collection.

Very interesting. I hope they surpass the quality of the Bear offerings I've seen and read about lately. It would be very heartening to read of another American slipjoint maker turning it up a notch in the QA area ala Case.

Schatt and Morgan make a very nice Scout in a variety of bone scales. Mine is golden bone and is quite exquisite. Unfortunately, they are only available in stainless.
Have you considered old Sheffield made Scouts? The pattern is called a Camper in Britain. I have half a dozen, all with good carbon blades but the knives as a whole are rather cheap and tinny with plastic scales.
I've been looking for a high quality Sheffield made Camper/Scout for years with no luck. The hunt is a great challenge though!
Will be even harder now that we can't easily buy knives on British ebay.
I'm really hoping that GEC bring one out in 1095.

mnblade,

I don't own any Bear & son knives because of what I have read about quality control issues. I think the problem stems from the fact that some of their knives are imported from china and maybe Pakistan. I have done a little more research on the scout knife front and it seems that bear & son will no longer be importing scout knives and will be making them here. The knife I wrote about earlier will be a reproduction of the RS3333 model and will have a carbon steel blade, however the Boyscouts of America call for their knives to have stainless steel blades. So bear and son will be making reproductions of previous models the first being the RS3333 model and also the current approved model by the Boyscouts of America with stainless blades. Hopefully the scout knives they make here will be of better quality.

A GEC scout would be sweet! I hope the Remington by Bear & son will be well made, I really like that model (the old style can opener is nice).

Ohhh GEC scout!!! Their amazing work would do a lot for the pattern.

This was a knife I did a serious try to get. I e-mailed them to see if they shiped to Sweden. I got an answer they didnt and that was fair enough for me. Later I discussed it in another tread and the nice gentleman AG Russell himself answered that this was now possible. Unlucky enough the knife was now out of stock. I still have the knife in thought but its a tricky road to say the least. Good to know though that its now possible to bye knifes from the company if the pattern comes back.

that Remington replica looks nice, will keep my eyes open when someone posts about it having handled it with own hands.

I have the Case Scout jr. Its a nice and wellbuilt knife but small. I EDC it a lot, most every day in the fifth pocket of my jeans. I have now tryed the Case SS in a trapper and in this Scout, I like it. Gets sharp, is easy to sharpen in the field. No fancy steel but good enough. Also a soft stainless has its positive sides compared to more advanced steels.
