Scout knives

I wonder what GEC would call it since their small trapper #73 model is referred to as a "scout"?

I can think of a few:), camp knife, camper, camp utility knife........

Gmountain, the fit and finish on the Boker is good, but the blades are quite useless. It took me a lot of work to get them sharp, and they only stayed that way for a very short time.

I've an old 'King Kutter' Boker Barlow made in Germany that's like that...looks great but won't cut worth a darn. Funnily I've a Boker Bonsai made in China stainless Barlow that knocks it in to a cocked hat as far as cutting goes.

I am pleased with the 5 Boker Tree brands that I have.
They sharpen well.
They are softer than the Case CV, but they take and hold a good edge.

I often wonder if there are good and bad batches of steel used in the same brand/type of knife? As people seem to differ widely in there experiences with steels from the same maker. I've noticed it most in my carbon blades.

A popular auction site (e--y) has some of the new boy scout knives listed. The steel type of the blade is not mentioned but if you look at the reading material that comes with the knife it states that the blade is 440 high carbon stainless. I hope they offer some in carbon steel.

jacknife,

I am a firm believer that the steel used by slipjoint companys for their knives can and do vary from batch to batch. Recent technology has made the heat treating of steel much more consistent but sometimes the hardness can still differ from batch to batch, a couple degree difference in either direction can be noticeable. Somtimes the companys source of steel is not produced any more (carbon v is a good example) so a substitute steel must be used this can be very noticeable (knives that are known to be made of carbon v sell at a premium over the same models made of similar steel.

I have 3 Scout knives that are made by Camillius. 2 of them are demo knives and one is a BSA knife.
