So if a guy was looking to acquire some small pieces of micarta, where is a good place to look? I was just hoping for a few scraps big enough to make firesteel handles for some of my knives. Most of what I see for sale online consists of 1/8" to 3/8" for full sized knife handles.

Could anyone recommend a micarta maker that I could ask about scraps. I'm sure they would have cutoffs that they just throw away.

Just an idea.....

Do a google search for homemade micarta. You will find youtube and websites to answer all your questions.

Basically it can be cloth, linen, paper or canvas that is soaked in resin ( I use marine grade) and stacked up then press between tow boards to squeeze the excess out. You can create some very cool micarta. Also look up Crash carta. He does a very nice job with it and some sweet tie dye patterns.

G10 is fiberglass cloth made the same way.

Check out Alpha Knife Supply, they are great people to deal with and have blocks of micarta or G10 that are nice for firestarters.

In my opinion making it yourself is fine if you want to. I make a lot myself but I find it to cost more and has a decent learning curve. I would just buy some if cost is a factor.

Scraps... most guys are going to have 3/8" thick at the very most, a block won't cost too much. I had to make a few before I got the process down right anyways.

If you want a lot, USAknifemaker sells a big ol box of scraps. That should keep you going for a couple days :D.

They USED to, but if I'm not mistaken, they don't currently have any for sale.

That being said, you can get more than enough to make several fire steel handles for a relatively cheap price, I.E, less than 20 bucks. No use looking for scraps. Just sell one of the fire steels and make up the cost.

Besides, making it is likely to be just as costly (if not more so) initially than just buying a few blocks or sheets.
