Scrap Steel Sources

I just got my hands on some spent (disposable) medical gas cylinders; about 2 1/2 feet X 3 in. diameter ("D" size). The tank walls are 1/8 inch thick.

My question is, though I know that this is high grade steel (read "Hoping good for blades"), do I need to worry about "grain" to the steel?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Try to contact the manufacturer and find out what the steel actually is. If they can't/won't answer, you'll just have to test some.

Or just scrap it out and buy a couple bars of new steel so you know exactly what you're dealing with. For $50 or less, you can get a bunch of knife quality steel.

I can't say for sure but I would doubt that they would be good knife steel. Try and do a bit of research online if there is a label or makers mark on them.
