Will a kydex sheath scratch a satin finish? I heard yes and no. This sheath is for a GW, so I'm ask'n here.OINK!
Lycosa

absolutely it will. kydex will eventually mark all finishes. ESPECIALLY if grit and sand are present, which is basically like taking sand paper to the knife.

I think the answer is yes. It's very imprtant to keep the sheath clean inside to minimumize scratching. If a piece of sand gets lodged inside, for example, it's curtains for the finish. Fortunately, it's easy to restore a satin finish.

Yes, but who cares? If you're carrying it in a sheath it's probably a user, and a few scratches just lends character.

My GW LE and my satin/blk paper LrMrS have developed a lot of character courtesy of their kydex sheaths.

answer is YES

Yes. Using a lubricant like RemOil will cut down on the scratching, but it's going to happen.

Short answer? YES. Bound to happen sooner or later. As Guyon pointed out in another thread... Friction happens, and that's where you'll find the rubs/scratches. Oil helps reduce the amount, but will not eliminate this possibility.

I've seen leather put rub marks on a satin blade. Eventually any sheath will do something visible to a satin finish. If you want to keep it mint I suggest no sheath at all, not even a cardboard one.

If I was as worried about "friction" as Guyon I'd still be a virgin.

I actually said, "FICTION happens."

You know, sort of like Tony G actually putting one of his satin blades in kydex. :D

I think it depends too on the style of the kydex. Some makers tend to craft sheaths that depend on a little bit of blade friction. Others tend to rely more on friction around the handle area.

Here are a couple of sheaths which depend mainly on handle friction. I haven't seen much, if any scratching, on the blades from the sheaths, although I did coat both blades with a healthy amount of RemOil before using the sheaths with any regularity. The first is by Tom Krein; the second is a Sheath Mechanic sheath.

I did see some scratching on my BATAC LE (in a Spec-Ops sheath) pretty quickly. I actually sanded some of the scratches out with 600 grit paper, oiled the knife pretty well, and have seen much less scratching since.

My point? Oil the knife well the first few times you use the sheath and it'll lessen some of the scratching--as long as you keep dirt/grit from getting down in the sheath. In that case, the dirt will stick to the oil and then, bingo... more scratches.

If it's a user though, it's not a huge issue.

Tony, you didn't steal that pic off of Bad Mojo, did you? :p

Nice sheath. I like the way the top edge forms a curl to fit an index finger.

I think a lot of people use the word "Scratch" wrong. To me a "Scratch" actually penetrates the metal surface (I know Tony, I said "penetrate"!). I think most people use the word "Scratch" to describe marks in the finish that don't penetrate the metal, but rather alter the finish. It is hard to describe, but with a satin blade finish, all the "finish" lines are in the same direction (ie; the direction the finishing belt on the knife grinder was running), when anything comes in contact with the blade, like a Busse factory cardboard sheath, kydex sheath, or whatever, it will add a line or mark in a different direction, thus causing a flaw in the original finish. Now, I don't deny that a small stone in a kydex sheath or even a leather sheath will make a scratch in the blade, but I think people need to realize the difference in "Scratches" and "surface finish" marks. Double cut finishes are also subject to the same definitions. I myself don't worry too much with the minor "surface finish" marks, but might say somthing about a definite "Scratch". What do you guys think?
