Scratches: Dog or Cat?

looks like that poor dog got a mouthfull and went in for seconds, what breed is that?

She's an American Staffordshire Terrier, a breed which shares common ancestry with the American Pit Bull Terrier. This particular specimen is submissive to me and gets along well with strangers, but has quite the prey drive.

The photo was taken after the terrier (Grandma's dog) had gotten out with my wife's boxer and boxer cross. They all three had gotten into one or more porcupines, their usual MO when my wife's dogs get out of their pen. The terrier is fine by herself.

Anyway, all three dogs were pretty bad. I took the picture after taking the worst two into my wife's clinic (lucky for me she's a vet). I had to come back for the terrier because of limited space in my truck. This is about the fourth time they have done that.

Quills like that can run $500 or more, each dog. There are usually a lot of quills in the mouth all the way back. Some have to be cut out where they have worked all the way under the skin. The dog has to be anesthetized for stuff like that. The quills are barbed, so if you leave them in they can migrate around inside the dog.

I have the number of one more gov't biologist who supposedly will be back in the office today. Hopefully he will be more interested.

...so did you ever get any confirmation (or a more informed opinion) on what made those scratches?

No, work came up and has been occupying too much time to start a game of phone tag. Maybe this week. . .

That is a cougar scratch. Big Tom can have a track almost 5 inches wide that one's a bit smaller.

Porcupine and badger walk kind of bowlegged, and their claw marks are closer together as a result. I'd have thought a cougar would be deeper, but I have never seen those. Fishers aren't that big. Too far south to be a wolverine...although you'd score many points if it was one:).

...but there's that grouping of 5 parallel scratches near the bottom of the picture. Doesn't that argue against cat? Seems to me that it suggests something with 5 claws on it.

Does anyone know if large cats are polydactyl (extra toes) the way some domestic cats are?

CHUPACABRA !!!!!!!!!!!
Too far North... that's why I said Sasquatch.

And probably, that's why Beezaur probably didn't get a lot of help when he called... the probably thought he was another Bigfoot hunter.

Only one grouping has five and I can think of a few ways that could be acheived so at least in my oppinion no. It is a cat who just happened to drag a back toe into another group of scratch marks.

Take a look around for beaver activity. These are similar to some I have seen where beaver are digging in for traction while dragging off a limb. Lots of other sign would be around though...

I do live in the immediate Chicago area!

So I realize that every dead squirrel with tire tracks over its back is a chupacabra victim, as well as any raccoons by the side of the road could only have been savagely attacked by the space goat.

I just thought that the sasquatches scared 'em off up Norte.
