scratches on the guard face

How do you get rid of the scratches on the face of the guard after it has been pinned and soldered.
I made the mistake of trying to just clean up that little bit of a mark that I made on the face of the guard getting the solder off. Now I have a fine network of light scratches all over the face of the guard and no matter how I try sanding them they will not go away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Steve, truth is - for me - I got so tired of feeling like a prisoner to that situation, I just learned how to build a knife differently.
That problem right there was one of the leading influences that caused me to pursue alternative knife assemblies in '98-'99.
I haven't been caught in that situation in this century.
I can focus my attention elsewhere.
If that's an on-going dilemma for you, just find another way to avoid it from happening entirely.

Glue sandpaper on a piece of aluminium with a (chisel ground) bevel on the opposing side and go over the face carefully

I let this thread go, thinking that someone would post the obvious.
The best way to deal with this is to avoid it.

Taping the blade right up to the guard will prevent any scratches on the blade. If you need to touch up the guard face, and even to buff it, the tape will make that easy.

Be aware that any mirror polished surface will show scratches and marks even if only touched with fingers or polishing cloths. Textured finishes and surfaces are only slightly more work to make, and much easier to maintain.

+1 for the hammered finish guard and fittings. It looks very nice and is easy to do with a small polished face ball peen hammer. This is also an excellent way to tighten up a loose fitting guard before assembly.
