Screen name. (Business questions)

Ideally this would have gone in the proposed Business Forum, in lieu of that I'm asking here. (Stacy, please close it if necessary, I'd rather it not be moved).

How did you come up with your sn? I'm planning on changing mine soon, but haven't decided if I'd rather use "Anthony Alms", or "Omega Leather". Did you use your name instead of the business name for a reason? Likewise, why did you choose the business name as opposed to your own name?

I think using my name while having my avatar and signature reflect my company would be okay, but it might be easier for the customer if I just titled my presence as the company name.

Does making your screen name the same as your company result in added hits from a search engine? I'd guess it would, but I don't know for sure.

Seems like a little thing, but I'm on the fence and am curious if there are any reasons why I should lean either way.

Thanks guys.

If I had a company name I would have went with that as my screen name and put my name in the signature. Will people be searching for "Anthony Alms sheaths" or "Omega Leather"?

They'll be searching for Omega Leather. I've always regretted not using my own name for my sn. I went with "StrigaMort" because I didn't really think I'd be here this long, hell, I was in my early 30's when I registered. The name was a carryover from another forum related to cars.

I like the integrity that using your given name shows, however, if it's in my best interest to use the company name, I'll do that.

It costs $10 to rename BF Strigamort to, better biz & authoritative, Omega Leather.

I like the idea of using your own name.

People will end up remembering you, then trying to remember that funny business name you have.

Just shortcut that and use your name.

Think of all the makers you know, then all the business names you know,
Fiddleback is the only business name I remember but then I still know his actual name too.

If they goodle search your name, they might find you, if they google search Omega...they may never find you.

I use my name because, well, it's my name.
People have been calling me and referring to me by my name for 60 years, now, because it's well, my name.
So I go by, well, my name.
If you want people to know who you are, why not go by, well, your name?

I have struggled with the whole business name, screen name, real name thing. My last name is Ohlemann. It is not a name that people remember or spell correctly. Part of me thinks people should learn my name and learn how to spell it if they want to do business with me but, that thinking is not conducive to building a business or brand. Ranger Bob has been a nickname of mine for years but, it is usually taken whenever I go to a new social media site and I have to find some variance if I want to use it. Regardless of my screen name, I always sign my posts so people know who they are having a discussion with. I am at a point now where, like you, I am trying to solidify my image and brand. Because I'm very young in my knifemaker journey, I don't mind completely changing things up so I can get it right.

I think Omega Leather is easier for a potential customer to remember than Anthony Alms. I just searched for omegaleather.com and saw that it is an available URL; you need to lock that down right NOW! If you wait, it will be gone. I think you should use Omega Leather as your screen name and sign your name to your posts.

Great suggestions so far. While still considering what to do, you could change the KnifeMaker / Craftsman / Service Provided under your user name to Omega Leather. That way it's visible at the top and bottom of your posts.

My name speaks the truth  lol umm, well I kinda liked the irony of it too... see what I did there.. "iron"y? k I'll shut up now :D

-Paul <------my real name :)

I changed my name to my real name when I went orange. I'm not sure if I'm going to change my business name soon, but I'm fairly certain I'm going to keep my given name. I'm not as old as Karl (poke poke poke) but I do happen to respond pretty well to it given the years I've had it.

Business name buddy. 1) you are trying to build a brand. The brand is Omega Leather not your name. 2)You have other sources of income. The more you separate and do under the business name the better BOE here in Kali and IRS like it. 3) They will cross reference in a google search, doesn't take long for that to start happening. You can search me, search for my knives, (under my name or business name), or search for my leatherwork, it all crossreferences and includes posts you've made here. 4) Buy that domain name now!!!! They are cheap. Especially if you buy it for multple years. Dang I always figured Strigamort was some little town up the road there where you were born or something..... like Pixley or Earlimart, Terra Bella or something like that!

Depends. Do you want to be a custom leather worker or do you want to be a highend but faceless leather factory. I have no idea if Paul Long has a company name or not, but I dang sure know who he is and what he does. Or as another example, Nick Wheeler vs Cold Steel. I know who both are and what they do. Its just a matter of which direction you want to take your business. Either way if you do good work customers will come, they just probably won't be of the same demographic, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I know what you mean. I registered here not knowing I would stick around or keep making knives. My username was one from a hunting sight I frequent. The little I have been around I have learned your name and reputation seem to be the key in custom knives. I will likely change mine at some point to my name. If I had a company or brand I was trying to promote then that would be my username.

My two cents (and keep in mind it's much easier said than done, and I'm still working on it...)

Use your name. And give people a reason to remember it. :)

Very interesting split. It's obvious that I'm not the only one that has given this some thought.

I very much remember some of you by your old name (Weatherman), and the avatars help. I've changed my avatar exactly once in the 17 years I've been on forums.

Alright guys, I believe I'll change to "Omega Leather" and keep my name and email in my sig. I'm building the business, not my name.

Dave, there's zero chance I'd have used Porterville (home town) as my sn. StrigaMort is actually an embarrassing name that I came up with when I was in my 20's.

I'm not really understanding how the domain name thing works. Looks like it's taken, but I can negotiate for it. Ilk need to contact the owner I guess, but I'll refuse to pay a ton of money for it.

Ah, Porterville or Springville I'd of recognized. Won a ranch roping up in Springville long time back. Yeah do what you can to snag that domain name.

Well, I guess I just decided to change the name of the business. I registered the domain www.omegaleatherworks.com

This should be fun. :) we'll see how it pans out. Definitely need a new laptop too.

Thanks for your help guys. Any general advice about web building welcome. For instance, should I make a new email address for the business, or just continue using my personal account? Should I open a new PayPal account, or continue using my established personal account? Clearly I'm brand spankin new to this. My brother in law builds websites as his profession so I'll contact him about that. I went with the godaddy website builder option and I'm pretty quick at learning this kinda stuff.

Edit- changed the title to reflect the business focus.

You know what would be seriously helpful? A business wip thread. I'm not kidding. Maybe I'll do one because I think it would be incredibly helpful to people in the beginning stages of building a business.

The other day when I checked, omegaleather.com was available. I am certain they are providing lists of searched domains to squatters to grab up for re-sale. Actually, I think Omega Leather Works says more about your business anyway. The name tells me that you make end products from leather versus maybe a leather supplier or coat store. I suggest next you go to Instagram and claim OMEGALEATHERWORKS as your username. If you're not on Instagram now or don't think you would use it, it doesn't cost anything to set it up and have the name just in case.

Good deal on Omega Leather Works, sounds more finished than just Omega Leather. Now you gots to do your DBA. Would of been 15 to 20 years ago up there in Springville, wow I'm getting old.
