Scribe One Line

Except for Scandi grinds, for until now I have always scribed two lines for bevel grinding. This last batch of twelve I decided it time to only scribe one center line. I was a bit a scared of doing that but also figured I could handle the grind by now. I may be mistaken but I think it was Kit Carson that said he did it that way. The results for me are amazingly better. Yes, it requires closer attention but the edge thickness comes out much more consistent about its length. Some makers scribe no line at all. They are that good. I will not be putting my scribe away though; not yet! Give the one line scribe a try. Next batch I intend to only scribe one line for tang taper. Saves time and helps in closer detail.

When we folks who who forge blades grind, we grind blades that are normally tapered! No way to scribe a center line on a tapered blade!
It's not as difficult as you may think.
Don't sell yourself short - you're probably better than you let yourself believe!

Well thats fine and my hat off to you forgers but I think my post rather obvious - that is pertaining to stock removal.

A fixture with two pins with a scribe point centered between the pins will scribe a centerline with no measuring. It will almost work on a tapered blade.

I scribe one line (on forged blades that are tapered) with a dial height gage on an 18X24 granite surface plate.

The ricasso is always the foundation of my knives... EVERYTHING on one of my knives is centered with the ricasso. If it's not... then something is off.

ps- Geez Roger, it takes you two years to try my suggestion and then you cheat me on the credit... some friend! (hahahaha! just kidding! ;) :D )

Nick taught me the same trick - now if I could just grind a blade like him I would be happy. It ain't fair - he is young, strong and talented too. But old age and deceit will outdo youth and ambition every time.

way to go Roger ,, you'll get the knack of it.. I don't scribe a line it just messed me up.... I grind one side keeping it straight to just under half way then the other side, then tweak it out ..to the use it will get in it's lifes ambition.

Of course it was obvious, friend.
Just tryin' to give you a pat on the back.
May the Force be with you.

Oh no!! I mean it, I consider you forgers a cut above. To me they are truley knife makers. I've never tried to forge. Sorry if I came off short.

Hey Nick, I am sorry. I new it was somebody here that had suggested that. You da man.
