Thanks for the recommendation but I don't have enough time to scrim all the knives that I would like to do. It is like pulling teeth to get my one day a month to set aside for scrim so I don't take commissions unless I make the knife as well. Even then delivery is very long.
George, how hard is it to do scrimshaw? Can a person just transfer a design onto a surface and then just scratch it on with a pin or something?
I'm sure a lot of us would like to add some little scrimshaw decorations to our handles but do not want to pay big bucks to have someone else do it. Any suggestions?
Scrimshaw is not really difficult. Doing quality scrim however takes a lot of time.
It took me several years starting with pen and ink drawings, technical pen drawings, and dozens of scrims to learn what I can do with the art form.
I suggest that you learn a pointillist technique, it gives a highly detailed picture slowly enough that one dot out of olace will not ruin the image. Scratching a picture in can be ruined by one scratch that gets away besides many people think that line drawing scrim looks a little cartoonish.
